Remember Last Summer: a cult horror saga

Remember…last summer is an American horror film saga loosely based on the novel of the same name by Lois Duncan published in 1973. The first film, released in 1997, was directed by Jim Gillespie and written by Kevin Williamson, famous for his work on the franchise He shouted. The film series captured the imagination of teenage audiences and became a classic of the slasher genre.

The first part of the saga tells the story of four friends: Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Barry Cox (Ryan Phillippe) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.) who are involved in a car accident mortal. Thinking they have killed a man, they decide to dispose of the body and never speak of the incident.

A year later, they started receiving threatening messages saying “I know what you did last summer.” What follows is a series of brutal murders committed by a mysterious hook-wielding killer. The commercial success of this film led to the arrival of two sequels, released in 1998 and 2006, which did not enjoy the same popularity as the original. A series was also broadcast in 2021.

The fourth film will arrive in 2025

Like other cult horror sagas like Halloween, The exorcist OR He shouted, Remember…last summer will also return to our screens. Sony Pictures announced Thursday that the new film in the saga, which bears the same name as the original 1997 slasher, will be released in theaters in the United States on July 18, 2025.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Vendetta) will direct this sequel from a screenplay he co-wrote with Sam Lansky, after an initial screenplay by Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz, producer of the original film, will also return to produce.

As previously announced, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will reprise their original roles. At the moment we do not yet know the details of the plot.
