Deadpool and Wolverine is eagerly awaited by Marvel fans in general, those of Deadpool and Wolverine in particular, and even by Marvel Studios themselves, who see it as an opportunity to revive a dying superhero universe. However it wasn’t so easy to bring Wolverine back to the screen, since Hugh Jackman had said goodbye to the character in the excellent Logan by James Mangold, which ended with the death of the most iconic X-Men character.

Hugh Jackman, a spontaneous decision

In an interview for Fandango (video below), accompanied by director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman explained that his decision to join the project was spontaneous and that he said it without discussing it in front of his agent and against the advice of also Kevin Feige.

I was going somewhere, I was driving, and I really had this epiphany, something that came from my gut that told me I wanted to make this movie with Ryan, I wanted to bring Deadpool and Wolverine together. I swear, when I said I was done with Wolverine, I meant it. But in the back of my mind, ever since I saw the first Deadpool, I’ve been thinking about these two characters together. (…)

As soon as I got home, I called Ryan and just said, “We’re doing this.” I hadn’t called my agent before, I hadn’t called anyone. I had to call my agent and say, “Oh, by the way, I just signed for a movie.” (laughs)

Shortly before, this May, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, had told him Empire who had advised Hugh Jackman against wearing Wolverine’s costume and claws, explaining: “I told him, ‘If I can give you any advice, Hugh, don’t come back.’ You had the best ending ever with ‘Logan.’ It’s not something we should undo.”

But the desire was too strong for Hugh Jackman, who explains to Fandango’s Jacqueline Coley that, sometimes, “things appear so clearly to you that you have to try.”
