Netflix style
Unlike the Venice Film Festival or the Toronto Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival does not invite original productions or exclusive Netflix distributions into its various selections. But nothing prevents the streaming giant from being present at the Cannes market. A strategic place where many films are financed and sold. This is how, on May 23rd, Variety announced exclusively that Netflix has acquired the US and UK distribution rights to Jacques Audiard’s film Emilia Perez, for an approximate sum 12 million dollars.
A decidedly significant figure given that the Netflix distribution of the film currently only concerns these two territories. In fact, Pathé is distributing the film in theaters in French-speaking countries and CDC United Network is screening it in South American countries.

A future public success on the platform?
It is the NEON company that, once again, will distribute the new Palme d’Or in North America. Anora by Sean Baker – after having distributed the latest winners of the Cannes supreme prize in a noteworthy way Parasite, Titanium, Without filter AND Anatomy of a fall -. But Netflix still managed it a very nice shot acquiring North American and British distribution ofEmilia Perez.
In fact, among the favorites for the 2024 Palme d’Or, Jacques Audiard’s film was warmly received by critics, before leaving the Croisette with the Female Actor Award given to all its female cast and to Jury Prize. A nice double that already gives the film good publicity. But the most important thing is the film itself.
In fact, its cast includes two well-known stars in the United States: Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez. Selena Gomez has huge popularity as a singer among the younger generation. And Zoe Saldaña is associated with the saga Avatars since its debut in 2009. Also featured is Emilia Perez Spanish, the second most spoken language in the United States after English. Finally, its subtle mix between crime film about drug trafficking and musical comedy is an advantage for an audience passionate about these two film genres.
And we add that, already awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, Emilia Perez it will be a film that Netflix can likely count on to stand out Oscars 2025…
