Tonight on TV: with 400 million dollars at the box office, this is Tom Holland’s other successful saga

The Other Hero by Tom Holland

If the whole world knows Tom Holland it is because the young British actor plays the role Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the recent trilogy dedicated to the superhero (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home AND Spider-Man: No Way Home). Although the character of Spider-Man belongs to Sony Pictures studios, they “loaned” him to Marvel so that he could appear in the MCU. Thus, the “his” Spider-Man had the privilege of becoming an ultra-popular Avenger and developing a special relationship with him Tony Stark/Iron Manplayed by Robert Downey Jr.

This interpretation of Spider-Man made Tom Holland a worldwide star. But the actor has also found success in another universe. Since 2022, in fact, he has been the interpreter of another imaginary hero, whose appearance on the big screen was eagerly awaited: Nathan Drakeadventurer and treasure hunter, hero of the video game series Unexplored.

Tom Holland wanted to be James Bond

After years of development, directors announced and then replaced (David O. Russell, Shawn Levy, Travis Knight), it was finally director Ruben Fleischer who was chosen in 2020 to direct Unexplored. For this film, Tom Holland has been announced in the role of Nathan Drake since 2017. And it is precisely the actor at the origin of the proposal for this action-adventure film, while he aspired to the origin to anything else

In fact, if the idea of a film about Nathan Drake’s youth was able to see the light, it was thanks to Tom Holland who proposed the idea of a film about Nathan Drake’s youth to Sony Pictures. the youth of James Bond, a character he adores. In fact, she revealed in January 2022 to Total film having proposed a film about a young 007, a proposal rejected but which gave birth to the idea of a film about Nathan Drake’s youth.

I had a meeting, during or after the filming of “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, to pitch the idea of a film about a young James Bond to Sony. It was his origin story. But that didn’t really make sense. It did not work. It was a kid’s dream and I don’t think it was of interest to the decision makers of the Bond saga. (…) But this idea of a young Bond sparked the idea that we could make a Nathan Drake “origin story”, rather than just an addition to the video game series. And that opened up the conversation.

A commercial success and a sequel in development

Self Unexploredstarring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, it received mixed reviews for its overall mediocrity and the fact that it was far below the standards of the genre (Indiana Jones in mind), the film is a worldwide box office success. He actually collects 401 million dollars, for a production budget of 120 million. A very good score for a first adaptation of the video game series, which paves the way for a sequel.

Shortly after the release ofUnexplored and its excellent start in theaters in February 2022, the head of Sony announces Unexplored it will become a film franchise. And in August 2023, it was producer Charles Roven who confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that a sequel was indeed in the works.

We had a lot of fun with “Uncharted.” Fans loved the result, and even people who knew nothing about the game loved the movie. So obviously we want to do another one.

If for the moment no official announcement or filming date has been communicated, it is therefore safe to bet that Tom Holland’s return as Nathan Drake becomes clearer every day…
