Joyeuse Retraite 2: an expected but disappointing sequel
After the success of the first part of Happy retirement! in 2019, which attracted more than 1.2 million viewers in France, a sequel was almost inevitable. Happy retirement 2! picks up where the first film left off.
After the misadventures of the first film, Philippe and Marilou (again played by Thierry Lhermitte and Michèle Laroque) travel to Portugal to discover their holiday home. They are accompanied by Olivier, their cousin responsible for the project, their former daughter-in-law Léa, her son Casa di her and their grandchildren Félix and Juliette. When they arrive, they find out the house is still under construction, that a donkey is crouching on their land and that the workers have abandoned the construction site. The family settles as best they can on the first floor, the only part almost completed, but here the problems begin.
Despite expectations, Happy retirement 2! it failed to replicate the success of the first film, far from it.
One of Thierry Lhermitte’s worst films
At the exit of Happy retirement 2!, the audience is not there, while the first managed to attract spectators. Despite an intense promotional campaign, the film failed to attract audiences to cinemas. At the box office, the comedy struggled to surpass 400,000 admissions, a result well below expectations for a sequel to a popular comedy.
Above all, the reviews of the film are catastrophic. As we can find out from our colleagues atAlloCinéthe average of viewer reviews on Happy retirement 2! they are 1.8/5, one of the worst results of Thierry Lhermitte’s career. On the press side he fares even worse, with an average of 1.4 / 5. For comparison, the first part received scores of 2.8/5 from the press and 2.1/5 from viewers.
We can thus read murderous opinions:
What can we say about this non-work?
Technically it is poorly acted, poorly lit, poorly directed. The scenery and dialogues remain, and there, for lack of luck, it is deplorable.
How can we finance such a disaster? This will remain the enigma of the day. Despite all the goodwill of the actors, it is clear that their talent alone is not enough.
Turnip. It would have been better to stick to the first part. This is too much. Too many stereotypes, too far-fetched, too obvious.
