Under the Seinebut abroad
Even if the Parisian postcard puts a lot of weight into it Under the Seine, Xavier Gens’ horrific shark film still places the French capital at the center of the world. Indeed, while Paris is starting the final preparations for the 2024 Olympic Games and France stands out on the political scene with the sudden dissolution of its National Assembly and the arrival of the far right at the gates of power – much greater danger and catastrophe more real than the sharks of Under the Seine -, THE phenomenal and worldwide success of the film on Netflix therefore serves as the icing on the cake of the country’s current immense publicity.

And even if there is something to be scared of and above all to laugh about, Under the Seine he worked to faithfully reproduce the quays of central Paris, its bridges, its dirty and very murky river. We believe it, and therefore we ask ourselves the question: the aquatic scenes of Under the Seine Were they filmed on location?
“It looks so realistic!”
In an interview given to Variety, Xavier Gens returned to the making of Sous la Seine, and in particular to the filming locations. He explains that in reality all the sequences in and on the water were filmed in Belgium and Spain.
We shot most of the underwater scenes in Belgium, in a studio with a 10 meter deep indoor pool called Lites Studios. We also shot the scenes in the catacombs there, we built the set and immersed it. Then we had to go to Spain to shoot the triathlon scenes because we couldn’t block the Seine. So we shot at an outdoor pool in Alicante, where “The Impossible” was filmed, and superimposed a Parisian backdrop. And it looks so realistic!
Even if you could be wrong, the images of swimmers being devoured under the bridges of Paris or of Sophia and Adil being dragged by the waves were therefore not captured in the Seine. Logical, since the Seine is a important traffic route which is very difficult to block, not to mention the crowding on the sidewalks that this would have caused. And finally, most likely, since the Seine was too polluted and unsuitable for diving and swimming, no one would have run the risk of diving anyway…
