Yeon Sang-ho, the director of Last train to Busan
Yeon Sang-ho is a director we have a lot of questions about. In 2016, South Korea dropped a horrible little bomb Last train to Busan. With this, the director managed to slightly renew the zombie film genre by imagining a virus breaking out in Seoul. Only, instead of staying in the city, Last train to Busan takes place, as the title suggests, on a train. Travelers will therefore not know what is happening in the South Korean capital until an infected person declares himself in one of the carriages. Then terror takes over and the dead accumulate before returning to life, ready to devour other innocents in turn.
The feature film is a real success. Unfortunately, the rest of Yeon Sang-ho’s career it wasn’t the same genre. We can even say that the director has never proposed a film that could compete qualitatively with Last Train to Busan. Both with Netflix productions Psychokinesis (2018) e Jung_E (2023), or with peninsula (2020), the messy sequel of Last train to Busan. The director still found success on the streaming platform by directing the series Pact with hell (2021) e Parasite: the grey (2024). In any case, let’s hope that his next project satisfies us this time. And we want to believe it since it will be supervised by a great Oscar-winning director: Alfonso Cuaron.
A thriller with Alfonso Cuarón
The Hollywood journalist announces that the director of Severity will have a producer and consultant role on Revelations, Yeon Sang-ho’s next film. It will be abouta thriller adapted from the South Korean webtoon and whose screenplay will be co-written by Choi Gyu-seok (Pact with hell). According to American media, this film will be abouta missing persons case. A detective, whose sister died following a terrible crime, will take charge of the investigation. An investigation that will lead her to a pastor from a small provincial town, who believes he has found the culprit of the kidnappings following a divine revelation. The man will be all the more involved as his son is one of the victims. The pastor will then be driven by his desire for revenge… Ryu Jun-yeol has been hired to play the pastor, while Shin Hyun-been will play the detective.
Yeon Sang-ho said he was happy to be able to work with Alfonso Cuarón on this new project, which will be broadcast directly on Netflixon a date still unknown.
Alfonso Cuarón, known for masterpieces such as Sons of Man and Gravity, has greatly influenced my work as a director. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with him on Revelations and have high expectations for our partnership.
