The lower side of the family : 12 years later paperboy
Nicole Kidman is currently starring in a romantic comedy that is very popular on Netflix: The lower side of the family. Alongside him we find Joey King, well known to the platform’s subscribers thanks to the trilogy Kissing boothas well as Zac Efron. In the film, Joey King plays the assistant of a movie star played by Zac Efron, who sees the latter fall under the spell of his mother, played by Nicole Kidman. If the film works, it is partly thanks to this quality casting and the chemistry that is felt between the actors. It must be said that for Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron it is not the first time that they have spoken. Because 12 years ago they both had a rather special experience paperboy (2012).

Directed by Lee Daniels, paperboy it’s the opposite of a romantic comedy The lower side of the familyThe film is based on the novel of the same name by Peter Dexter, which in turn is inspired by a true story, and tends more towards the detective thriller. It follows a journalist named Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey), who returns to his hometown of Lately, Florida. His goal is to investigate a murder case to exonerate Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack), a petty criminal accused of this murder.
Added to this is Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman)who fell in love with the convict after communicating with him by correspondence. She also intends to prove his innocence in order to marry him. Ward will therefore commit himself his younger brother Jack (Zac Efron) as a driver to help them with their task. But the latter will also fall in love with Charlotte, who will prefer that they remain friends, much to Jack’s dismay.
A failure for this trash film
paperboy It’s not a memorable film and the reviews were quite mixed. The audience didn’t respond either, as the feature film was only introduced $3.7 million at the worldwide box officewith just 152,000 registrations in France. A failure obviously despite this attractive casting and the promise of shocking sequences. In fact, as he wrote Publication in his review: “Trying with all my strength to to cause a sensational scandalwe always run the risk of being ridiculed. This is the trap Lee Daniels fell into, and not even half of itThe media then added that the director had bet everything ona handful of awkward scenes heavily labeled as “trashy”, and which show an almost total laziness for the rest of the staging“.
During its presentation at the Cannes Film Festival, paperboy had been booed precisely because of certain sequences that are destined to be shocking. The one we remember most is obviously the moment in which Nicole Kidman goes to urinate on Zac Efron. Frustrated at not being able to go further with Charlotte, Jack heads towards the sea. Once in the water, the boy is to be stung repeatedly by a jellyfish. In the worst case, he still manages to reach the beach. Charlotte then arrives shouting “If anyone’s going to pee on him, it’s going to be me.And there she is, running to treat the boy’s wounds (although, in reality, there are other more relevant choices than urine when dealing with a jellyfish sting).
Nicole Kidman Really Did It With Zac Efron
This rather unlikely sequence of Nicole Kidman doing her business on top of Zac Efron will remain in the memory. An even crazier moment when we know that the actress actually performed to shoot this scene. This is what director Lee Daniels revealed GQ (through HuffPost):
This scene was difficult to do. It was the third day. The first scene we shot was the love scene between Kidman and John Cusack. The second day we shot the telepathic sex scene in prison and the third day the urine scene.
Ultimately, the director would have been hesitant to keep this sequence in the final cut. But Nicole Kidman would have really given him no choice.
Nicole Kidman said: ‘Lee you made me pee on Zac Efron, if you don’t put that scene in the movie, you’re crazy! I did it! I did it!’
The latter had also confirmed with Expiration who had actually shot the scene as we see it in the film, without deception.
Yes, I actually did that scene. That’s what Lee wanted. It was written in the script.
Apparently Zac Efron was not traumatized by the experience and was happy to be able to work with Nicole Kidman again for The lower side of the family.
