A legendary accident in motorsport history
The story of Austrian Niki Lauda, legendary Formula 1 driver three times world champion (1975, 1977 and 1984), is one of the most famous cars in the history of motorsports, especially because of the terrible accident that occurred on August 1, 1976 during the German Grand Prix on the famous Nürburgring circuit. After losing control of his Ferrari following a mechanical failure, he ended up against an embankment at 290 km/h and then bounced against the guardrail. He was then violently hit by two other F1 cars. Trapped in the cockpit of the F1 car that caught fire, with his helmet torn off, he was freed after a minute by other drivers who rushed to his aid.
Severely burned in the face, with his lungs severely damaged by smoke inhalation, Niki Lauda was taken to the hospital in very critical condition. He survived. And 37 days after his accident he surprised the entire world by showing up at the start of the Italian Grand Prix, to continue competing with his rival and friend James Hunt for the world champion crown.
