The Disappearance: A TV Movie by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade

If there is a French author and director who has distinguished himself in works inspired by legal stories, it is Jean-Xavier de Lestrade. He recently signed the series Sambreinspired by true events. He also directed the series Laetitiathe film about the Courjault affair, or the Oscar-winning documentary An ideal culprit. In 2011, Jean-Xavier de Lestrade was at the helm of the TV movie Disappearanceworn by Thierry Godard, Alix Poisson, Yannick Choirat and Géraldine Pailhas.

The film tells the story of Betty Gaillon, played by Géraldine Pailhas, who disappears Without leaving a trace. Her lover, Franck, is convinced that it was her husband, Bruno Gaillon, played by Thierry Godard, who killed her. The TV movie explores the family dynamics and the suspicions that arise following this mysterious disappearance.

The plot follows the judicial journey of Bruno, accused of the murder of his wife despite the absence of a body and concrete evidence. The story is inspired by the true case of Suzanne Viguier, an unsolved case that captivated French public opinion.

The True Story Behind the TV Movie

The Suzanne Viguier case began on February 27, 2000, when Suzanne, a dance teacher and mother of three, disappeared from her home in Toulouse. Her husband, Jacques Viguier, quickly became a suspect, especially after he reported her handbag missing, which was later found at their home, and got rid of the mattress in their bedroom, which mysteriously caught fire a few days later.

Despite the lack of bodies and direct evidence, Jacques Viguier is accused of voluntary homicide. In 2009 he was acquitted, but the prosecutor appealed. In 2010 he was retried, defended by Éric Dupont-Moretti. This highly publicized trial highlighted the flaws in the investigation and Viguier’s evasive behavior. After deliberations, he was again acquitted, leaving the mystery surrounding Suzanne Viguier’s disappearance hanging.

This story was publicized and inspired several works, including the television film Disappearance and the movie An intimate beliefby Antoine Rimbault, released in 2019, which also explores this complex and intriguing legal drama.
