How Babies See the World Around Them: An Amazing Property of Our Vision

Do you think the first thing a newborn sees in their life is their mother? It’s just a beautiful fantasy! In the first months after birth, the child sees the world in a completely different way from everyone else.

Scientists have long argued over how newborns view the world around them. And so far, experts have come to only one general conclusion: the eyes, like the nervous system, don’t work well immediately after birth. The child’s senses need time to develop and adapt to new realities.

Some scientists believe that in the first weeks after birth, babies only see everything in black and white. Other experts are sure that at first newborns see everything upside down.

However, babies’ visual system develops very quickly. A few weeks pass and the baby begins to see bright colors – first red, then the rest. At three months, the baby learns to distinguish the facial expressions of the parents and to fix the gaze on their faces. And at four months, children already know how to pay conscious attention to objects located 30-40 centimeters from their face.

The visual system improves considerably around the age of 6 months. At this stage, the baby can already deliberately pick up some things to which he pays attention, as well as look at complex drawings with many details for a long time: this is considered good training for the development of the baby’s vision.

The final formation of the child’s vision occurs before 1 year. And in this he is helped by increased activity. The child learns to move independently, gets acquainted with the world and learns more and more new things, which also affects the development of his senses.
