A failed trailer?
On July 9, 2024, fans of the film Gladiator and the great cinematic spectacle have finally been able to discover the first trailer of Gladiator 2his long-awaited sequel. Directed by Ridley Scott, with Paul Mescal in the lead role, as well as Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal in key roles, Gladiator 2 It’s an event film and the most important title distributed this year by Paramount Pictures. The stakes are therefore very high, after the triumphant success of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece released in 2000, and unfortunately these first images do not seem to have largely convinced…
In fact, as noted The Hollywood Journalistif the trailer has been viewed worldwide a very high number of times in three days (approximately 215 million views on various platforms), on YouTube as of July 12, the “likes” amounted to 133,000.antipathies” has 279,000… A largely negative report, accompanied by thousands of comments from fans who say they are disappointed, perplexed and annoyed.

A musical choice that stands out
First point that most disturbed most of the fans, the use of the song”No church in the wild” by Jay-Z and Kanye West. A famous and very successful hip hop piece, but one that doesn’t necessarily find its place a Roman peplos. A priori, this title should not be in the film. In fact, it should be much more classical and orchestral in its musical direction. And it is normal for a trailer to use a title that has no connection with the setting, the subject and the soundtrack of the film being shown. However, after the compositions of Hans Zimmer and the songs of Lisa Gerrard for the 2000 film, the atmosphere that comes from this choice is radically different, and legitimately disturbing.
Images that say too much
Second criticism – understandable – the linear and generous editing of the trailer shows a lot of the film and its story. We already understand the journey of Lucio (Paul Mescal), who we imagine was a soldier before being taken prisoner and enslaved, to then return to Rome as a gladiator thirsty for revenge. Helping him in his vengeful journey is the character played by Denzel Washington, who seems very close to Proximo, owner of a “stable” of gladiators in Gladiator.
A great battle scene, the gladiator training for combat, the fate of Rome by swords and a fight in the arena, two brother emperors, one of whom has a profile very close to that of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) in the 2000 film… If Gladiator 2AS Top Gun: Nonconformist in its own way, it should naturally be a suite composed of several sequences remake of the first film, this very explicit trailer perhaps testifies to a small lack of inspiration and could go against the expectations linked to the film, in answering too soon.
We also note the ignorance and gross stupidity of some commentators, who question the presence of legendary actor Denzel Washington in the casting and in his images, based on the color of his skin. A racist stupidity coupled with a lack of knowledge of history, the Roman Empire was a mixed population, with many dignitaries, governors, soldiers and important figures in society being of African and North African ethnic backgrounds. While these comments are repugnant and have no place anywhere, they are unfortunately the third reason for the trailer’s poor reception online.
Doubt creeps in…
The very mixed reception of this first trailer, despite the breathtaking spectacle what it promises, perhaps also finds its origin in the appreciation of Ridley Scott’s recent filmography. In fact, since 2007 and American Gangsterthe British filmmaker has proven himself both hot and cold, between small failures and anecdotal films. And just a couple of extraordinary results that have gone almost unnoticed Sign in 2013 or especially the excellent The Last Duel in 2021. After the very contrasting trend of Napoleon in 2023, Gladiator 2 will do him such honor Gladiator placing itself in the category of its author’s great films? Or will it be classified among his anecdotal successes?
