Boris Johnson and his populist approach to politics have long divided people and observers in Britain and abroad.
Some celebrities regularly criticized his style and agenda, including Brexit and immigration policies.
So it was no surprise that the stars were energetic in their reactions when the 58-year-old confirmed on Thursday that he would step down as leader of the Conservative Party but intended to remain prime minister until a successor is elected.
Hugh Grant, who played the fictional British Prime Minister very well i really love itHe asked well-known Brexit activist Steve Bray to tweet Johnson about the famous comedy show. The Benny Hill Show, which aired on the BBC and then on ITV from 1955 to 1989. “Got Benny Hill’s Music?” Grant placed his order.
Bray complied and, within hours, posted a video of himself performing during his latest protest in London on Thursday. “Only [Hugh Grant] As requested today here at the media circus…” he tweeted.

“He will! Bless my soul,” tweeted Stephen Fry of Johnson’s announcement. “But not yet…”
Fry added: “He just couldn’t do a decent job and walk away. He certainly comes across as a horseman on the loose, a gentleman elephant, rather than a rogue elephant trampling what’s left of our democracy.”
Fry also posted a photo of Johnson with former US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France in 2019, commenting, “Oh oh oh, days like this.”
Meanwhile, Ireland’s Aisling Bea (living with yourself, This way) tweeted about the big political news in reference to the hit Netflix show. “We’re not trying to burst the ‘goodbye Boris bubble,’ but at the end of every season.” Weird stuff“Just when we think the evil is gone and defeated, we learn that it lives in the hearts and minds of frightened children… or that it is secretly funded and supported by the Russian government,” he wrote.
Piers Morgan, who now hosts TalkTV, a channel run by Rupert Murdoch’s News UK, also criticized Johnson on Twitter. “Boris Johnson will step down as he did: bragging, cursing and blaming everyone but himself,” he said. “What a terrible last speech by a man who turned out to be a truly terrible prime minister.”
Morgan added: “Boris Johnson cannot live as the most pathetic of prime ministers, especially when the majority of his ministers voted against him. We have a pandemic, a war and a financial crisis, we need real leadership, not this farce. “
Grant argued that media titans would play a crucial role in choosing Johnson’s successor. “Dear world, you might be wondering what will happen next in terms of the British constitution,” he tweeted. “The answer is that the 3 newspaper owners, not all resident in the UK for tax purposes, will get together and elect our next prime minister or ‘Poodle’.” Then the queen anoints them.”
