The movie Autumn Legends takes up much of Jim Harrison’s story and is set in 20th century Montana. We discover Colonel William Ludlow, who, disillusioned with the government’s attitude towards Native Americans, decides to settle on an isolated farm with his three sons. Alfred, Tristan and Samuel grow up in this environment and remain close. Until the day Samuel returns from college with him Susannah, his girlfriend. Unfortunately for the young couple, their love story cannot last. Because Samuel and his two brothers have mobilized World War I.

From this conflict only Tristan and Alfred return. The Death of Samuel is then experienced very badly by Tristan, who feels guilty. However, upon his return from the war, he began a romantic relationship with Susannah. An intense and unstable relationship that will end when Tristan leaves, wanting to travel to face his inner demons. It was then that Alfred, secretly in love with Susannah, approached her before marrying her.
A public success
When it came out in theaters, Autumn Legends reported none other than 160 million dollars in turnover worldwide. A great financial success that is explained, in part, by the presence of Brad Pitt in the casting. The actor had revealed himself a few years earlier with Thelma and Louise (1991) and had just made an impact Interview with a Vampire (1994). Again,Tom Cruise has been considered initially for the role of Tristan. But having refused, Brad Pitt replaced him and was heavily involved in this project, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination in the category Best Actor in a Drama Film.
Given the success of Legends of the Fall and this recognition at the Golden Globes, one might think that Brad Pitt carries the film in his heart. In reality, it is quite the opposite, as Edward Zwick revealed in his memoirs Successes, flops and other illusions: my forty years in Hollywoodexcerpts of which had been published by Vanity Fair. The director revealed that from the first reading of the script with the rest of the cast, Brad Pitt wanted to resign. The producer at the time, Marshall Herskovitz, eventually talked him out of it.
But a film hated by Brad Pitt
Filming then began, but under difficult conditions. The summer waswettest on record in Alberta“, O Autumn Legends was filmed. Edward Zwick later described the place as “a hellish landscape full of mudEnough to create a bit of anxiety for Brad Pitt and many disagreements between the director and the star.
Sometimes, no matter how experienced or sensitive you are as a director, things don’t work out. You think the actor is in opposition, but he finds you dictatorial. (…) Both are right and both are wrong.
Despite these difficulties, the final result has largely convinced the public, much more than the press. ON Rotten tomatoesthe romantic drama has 87% positive reviews on the side of the spectators and only 59% on the side of the press. Such a divergence of opinions on Assigned which shows a score of 2/5 for the press and 3.9/5 for the spectators. Among the criticisms leveled at the film, The Cinema Notebooks he wrote that “Legends of Autumn is imbued with a surprising softness“.
An opinion visibly shared by Brad Pitt, who he hated the feature film when he discovered it. According to Edward Zwick, the actor was not happy with the elimination of a scene that allowed him to emphasize the madness of his character. A shot that Brad Pitt liked a lot and that the director thought, in hindsight, should have been kept, and apologized for it.
