Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas for Pablo Larraín

We can’t say.Angelina Jolie has impressed with her latest roles in Those Who Want Me Dead and The Eternals. Two films from 2021. Since then the actress has been waiting. But with her next film, this time she should make a memorable return to the screens. She will in fact be exposed in Marybiopic on Greek singer Maria Callas signed Pablo Larrain. The director is a regular in the genre after Neruda (2016), Jackie (2017) and Spencer (2021). However, the Chilean director never approaches his biopics in an academic way. Pablo Larraín usually takes a specific element of the lives he tells and mixes different genres with it, such as the thriller with Spencer, a sort of ghost film about Lady Diana.

For Maryon which the director, with Steven Knight on the screenplay, decided to focus the last days of the singer’s lifein the 70s in Paris. His goal this time was not to make”a dark film about a tragic situation“, but above all to tell the story of a”woman who has spent her life singing to others, caring for others, caring for her relationships, and who is now ready to take care of herself and find her own destinyThis is what the director stated (via Variety) during the press conference of Mary has the Venice Film Festival where it was presented.

7 months of training before singing at La Scala

For Angelina Jolie, this role was important, because she identified strongly with Maria Callas. But it was also difficult to get close. Mainly because of what she is lyrical singing. Because, as she explained in the same press conference, the actress had to have vocal confidence and be able to sing in public. Something she had never done and that created her very anxious.

Everyone here knows I was terribly nervous. I trained for almost seven months because when you work with Pablo you can’t do anything halfway. He demands, in the most wonderful way, that we really work, that we really learn and that we really practice.

Seven months of training were therefore necessary for Angelina Jolie to master her voice sufficiently. To put the filming of the singing scenes in the best conditions, Pablo Larraín began with a sequence in a small location, before finishing with the Parisian theatre La Scala.

The first time I sang, I remember being very nervous. My children were there and helped me close the door so no one else could come in, and I was shaking. Pablo, in his decency, started me in a small room and ended me at La Scala. So he gave me time to grow.

This evolution of Angelina Jolie should therefore be visible on the screen. Mary will be discovered in the cinemas February 12, 2025.
