Gandolfini died at the age of 51, on June 19, 2013, as a result of cardiac arrest, caused by natural causes. In the documentary Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranosthe CEO of HBO, Chris Albrechtrecalled the actor’s problems with substance abuse during the filming of the series.
“We did an intervention with him in my apartment in New York. That was to try to get him into rehab,” he said (via NME). “We had already had a lot of friction at that point, and the ruse was that I was inviting Jimmy over so we could talk it over and clear things up.”
“He walked in and saw everybody sitting there and said, ‘Oh, f*** it.’ And he walked out. Everybody said, ‘Jimmy, Jimmy!’ And he turned to me and said, ‘Fire me,’ and walked away,” he recalled. Furthermore, Steven Van Zandtinterpreter of Silvio Dantecommented how his co-star “probably quit the show every other day. Maybe every day.” Additionally, he revealed how James Gandolfini would “disappear” for short periods, especially when the pressure of leading the show “got to him.” Watch the trailer below:
