The great return of Ice Age?
The saga The Ice Agea true monument of animated cinema, could return to the big screen with a sixth film. In any case, this is what John Leguizamo, the original voice of Scrat, has confirmed. Since its debut in 2002, the franchise has achieved resounding success with five films in total over $3.2 billion at the worldwide box office. After a break from the release of Ice Age: The Laws of the Universe in 2016 and a spin-off on Disney+ in 2022, the announcement of a new film is already exciting longtime fans.
A legendary saga that has marked several generations
It all started in 2002 with the release of the first The Ice Agea film that immediately won the hearts of young and old thanks to its captivating characters and irresistible humor. We discover Manny, a grumpy mammoth, Sid, a clumsy slothand Diego, a saber-toothed tiger, as they travel through a prehistoric ice age trying to save a human child. The film’s success not only propelled Blue Sky Studios to the top of the animated film scene, but also spawned a cult franchise.
With sequels that have managed to keep the public’s enthusiasm alive, the saga has expanded, developing a rich universe populated by new characters, such as Ellie, Manny’s companion, or Buck, an intrepid weasel introduced in Ice Age 3: The Age of Dinosaurs.
In 2022, the saga returned to Disney+ with The Adventures of Buck Wilda spin-off film centered on the famous weasel. However, this production did not have the same reception as the previous films, partly due to the absence of the main characters and their original voice cast. However, this did not stop fans from hoping for a real return of the main franchise to the cinema.
Ice Age 6: What We Know
This was during a recent interview (via Screen Rant) that John Leguizamo, the actor who has voiced Sid the Sloth since the first film, revealed that Ice Age 6 was in preparation. While the details are still unclear, this announcement was enough to reignite the excitement around the franchise. While Leguizamo has not confirmed his involvement or that of other historical actors such as Ray Romano (Manny) or Denis Leary (Diego), the information seems to indicate that a new chapter is indeed on the way.
This sixth work, however, will be the first not to be animated by Blue Sky Studios, the original studio behind the first five films. In 2021, Blue Sky was closed by Disney due to the economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. The new work will therefore be produced by 20th Century Animation, with the help of Bardel Entertainment, which had already worked on the spin-off The Adventures of Buck Wild.
As for the plot of this new film, nothing has been confirmed yet. Two options seem likely: either it will be a direct sequel to Ice Age: The Laws of the Universe of 2016, or it could be integrated elements of the spin-off centered on Buck. It is also possible that new characters will join the gang, as they explore other periods of prehistory.
The big question remains whether the original actors will return to voice their iconic characters. During the spin-off The Adventures of Buck Wildmany of the main actors had been replaced by new actors, a decision that was not well received by all fans.
