I was willing to risk the movie unless I found the one real Terry Richmond. The search was incredibly short, because within a few weeks I got on a Zoom call in Louisiana with Aaron Pierre and in less than two minutes I knew he was the guy. We had a very deep conversation. (…) He didn’t seem desperate at all, but I felt like we needed each other in that moment.
This discussion with Aaron Pierre re-motivated the director. But the production could not resume immediately. It took a yearbecause we had to start from scratch. Netflix’s support was then decisive, and Jeremy Saulnier now says he is more than satisfied with this experience, even just watching it a push of fate.
No one can imagine a version of the film now without Aaron Pierre. He carries him on his shoulders. (…) It was the most incredible twist in the film. I think fate intervened and Aaron and I were destined to work together. He was so respectful of the script. We were in Louisiana in the blazing sun and he had to lift human bodies over his head and then learn eight pages of dialogue. The task at hand was quite intense.
