The two British actors Tom Hardy and Christian Bale have only worked together once so far. And it was for a memorable film, The Dark Knight Risesreleased in 2012 and the conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s fabulous Batman trilogy. Tom Hardy plays in this one Banethe main antagonist, and is particularly impressive in this role, having greatly developed his corpulence and musculature for the occasion.

When we leave The Dark Knight RisesTom Hardy had jokingly recounted on the set of Jonathan Ross’s talk show his first meeting with Christian Bale, while the two actors were in Los Angeles to try on costumes and make auditions. Confident because he had transformed himself physically for the role, Tom Hardy thought he would impress Christian Bale… But the meeting took another direction.

I had gained weight and felt really strong. I had been working out. I walk into the trailer and I see Christian sitting there. He didn’t have a shirt on, just a jacket on. I see his arms, I look at him and I say, “Yeah, I can do this easily.” (laughs). I put on the costume, I go to the set and there I see this huge character appear, almost 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide, with his pointed ears. I look at him and there he is looking at me and he says, “Oh yeah. I’m Batman.” (laughs)

Christian is terrifying as Batman. He looked me straight in the eye and I said, “I’m not going to survive this.”

The rest is history, including their clash. The Dark Knight Rises to give an apotheotic conclusion to the trilogy carried forward by Christian Bale.
