Tonight on TV: This Thriller with French Stars Was a Failure and Is Considered Nonsense

Black Rivera thriller validated by Nanarland

In the thriller genre, French cinema has been able to offer quality proposals. Jean-Pierre Melville’s films are proof of this. But success is not always achieved with this highly codified genre that can easily fall into banality, or worse. This is where we find Black Riverfeature film by Erick Zonca in which we find in the cast Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris, Sandrine Kiberlain or even Charles Berling. An exceptional cast for this film noir in which he is the protagonist an exhausted police commanderwho is investigating the disappearance of a teenager. To help him with his relationship, the boy’s private tutor offers his services, but he is a little too interested in this story.

Opinions on Black River are mixed to say the least. Some reviews have been very positive. ON Cinema Seriesour critic wrote at the time of the film’s release: “Vincent Cassel and Romain Duris compete in an excellent thriller that explores the twists and turns of the human condition“. Just like First I saw it”a chaotic yet thrilling film, dominated by Vincent Cassel’s larger-than-life composition“. However, much of the press feedback has been far less flattering. tel Teleramawho believed that “nothing works in this dark thriller“, While The world discovered that”Fleuve noir accumulates clichés of the genre and (that) histrionics of Vincent Cassel to the point of grotesqueness“.

However, the most embarrassing part is elsewhere Black Riverwhich at the time of its release in theaters has only accumulated 294,000 entries. Indeed, Nanarland “validated” the film. Which, according to the criteria of the specialized site for girls, is never reassuring…

Bad atmosphere on set?

Finally, apart from the theatrical release which was not a great success Black Riverits production would not have been obvious either. It was Sandrine Kiberlain who first stated, a few months before the film’s release, that she had not liked this experience, and he consequently refused to talk about the feature film. Erick Zonca was later billed as “a rather tough director“from journalist Patrick Cohen, who claimed that Gérard Depardieu had left the set”after six days“for the atmosphere on the set. And that”various testimonies” would go in this direction. Which Erick Zonca denied. The actor, however, actually left the set and Vincent Cassel was called at the last moment to replace him.
