“The Role of a Lifetime”: Angelina Jolie Impresses in the Trailer for Her New Film

Angelina Jolie is Maria Callas

The trailer of MaryPablo Larraín’s new film has just been released in theaters and the first impressions leave no doubts: Angelina Jolie, who plays the the legendary singer Maria Callasis already at the center of the Oscar race. Directed by the Chilean director, who made a name for himself with biopics such as Jackie AND Spencer (which allowed Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart to be nominated for Oscars), Mary It promises to be a work that is at once intimate and grandiose, like the icon of the work it depicts.

Mary delves into the tormented life of Maria Callas, an emblematic figure of world opera. Born in New York to Greek parents, the famous soprano went down in history not only with her unique voice, but also with her charisma, her dramatic style and her eventful private life. The film retraces the main stages of her career, but also the most personal moments of her life, until her death at the age of 53, following a heart attack.

To embody this legend, Angelina Jolie took her role very seriously. In a statement, the actress said she felt an immense responsibility to honor the life and legacy of Callas. And it is also this passion and this commitment that could push her towards a new Oscar nomination (she won the statuette for best supporting role for A stolen lifebut never won Best Actress). Her physical transformation and unusual performance should secure her a nomination.

A new portrait of a strong woman by Pablo Larraín

Director Pablo Larraín, known for his unique approach to the biopic, collaborated with screenwriter Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blindersto offer a sensitive and rich portrait of one of the greatest figures of opera. Larraín had already distinguished himself with Spencera film about Princess Diana that earned Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and with Jackiea biopic about Jackie Kennedy, which followed the hours after JFK’s death.

It seems that Mary follows a similar path, highlighting a complex female figure, between public greatness and private vulnerability. There the notable difference lies in the temporality : While Jackie AND Spencer it took place in the space of a few days, Mary follows the singer for several years, although the heart of the film recalls her last days, in 1977, in Paris.

The film is scheduled for release on February 12, 2025 in France.
