Jupiter: the fate of the Universethe unfortunate failure of the Wachowskis

The Wachowskis had worldwide success with the Matrix saga. After a very successful first feature film (the erotic thriller Limit), the duo gave life to a cult work, now anchored in pop culture. However, after Matrix (1999-2003) was more complicated. Despite their attempts to innovate with original films, the Wachowskis suffered two box office failures Speed racer (2008) e Cloud Atlas (2012). This did not stop Warner Bros. to continue to trust them Jupiter: the fate of the Universe (2015). Especially since this sci-fi film was originally intended to launch a franchise, as far as that goes Matrix. Unfortunately, even in this case, success was not achieved.

Inspired by both The Odyssey of Homer e Wizard of Ozas well as The Incal by Mœbius and Alejandro Jodorowsky for the visual aspect, Jupiter: the fate of the Universe it is an ambitious work. We follow Jupiter Jones, a Russian immigrant born at sea and living in Chicago. The young woman earns her living by working as a cleaner, and is ready to sell her eggs to afford an astronomical telescope similar to her father’s. However, during the operation she discovers that the aliens want to eliminate her. Then comes Caine, a former military hunter who comes to Earth to save it. The latter explains it to himanother destiny awaits him. Since her genetic imprint is the same as the murdered ruler Seraphi Abrasax, it is to Jupiter that Earth returns, to the detriment of Balem, who then wishes to kill her.

A nightmare for Channing Tatum

If the synopsis of Jupiter: the fate of the Universe doesn’t seem that original, there was a possibility of launching a franchise thanks to the richness of the universe imagined by the Wachowskis. Directed by Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, the feature film benefited from an estimated budget between 175 and 210 million dollars (excluding promotions). A considerable cost which allowed the development of numerous special effects and impressive stunts, which were very complex to carry out.

Like the eight-minute chase sequence where Jupiter and Caine try to escape aliens in Chicago, which forced both artists to film every day for six months. On this topic, Channing Tatum said Variety how difficult this shoot was.

Jupiter has been a nightmare from the beginning. It was a movie where everything went wrong. We were all there for seven months, working ourselves to death. It was difficult.

Technically, the Wachowskis really innovated by using new special effects tools or imagining filming methods. How to create a six camera rig mounted on a helicopter and it covered almost 180 degrees of the action. But this excessive ambition of the directors did not bear fruit Jupiter: the fate of the Universe was a financial failure. With just $184 million in worldwide revenue (via Box office mojo), the film is far from being profitable. Furthermore, despite some defenders, such as CinemaTeaser who presented it as “a great show“, the feature film was poorly received by most of the press. With only 28% positive opinions Rotten tomatoes, Jupiter: the fate of the Universe probably deserves to be rehabilitated today…
