The killer : by the great John Woo

Film buffs passionate about 1980s Hong Kong action cinema should at least know this The killer (1989, released in France in 1995) by John Woo. One of the director’s most important films Behind-the-face (1997) e Mission Impossible 2 (2000) before leaving to film in the United States. Inspired by The Samurai (1987) by Jean-Pierre Melville and Bad roads (1973) by Martin Scorsese, follows the film a hitman named JefF. Responsible for eliminating a group of people in a bar, he accidentally injures Jennie, a singer. Then he loses his sight. Filled with remorse, and falling in love with her, Jeff decides to accept one last contract to finance his operation. But between Inspector Li who is doing everything to stop him, and his former boss who prefers to eliminate him rather than let him retire, things will be more complicated than expected for Jeff.

35 years later having delivered this immense action film brought forward Chow Yun-fat is at the top of his classJohn Woo decided to make it happen a remake. A long-standing project (in 1992 Walter Hill and David Giler had already developed a screenplay), which arrives when the director is far from being at his best. His latest productions have gone unnoticed. But we always have a faint hope of one day rediscovering the greatness of the director who films doves in slow motion like no other. Except, unsurprisingly, it’s the American version of The killer it is not essential.

Nathalie Emmanuel faces Omar Sy in the remake

Taking part of the plot of the original film (but not all), The Killer of 2024 this time follows a named killer Zee (Nathalie Emmanuel, rather elegant). It is also in Paris that he operates, making contracts with Finn, played by Sam Worthington freewheeling. Again the assassination of people linked to drug trafficking fails as Jenn, a singer present at the scene, falls during the attack and loses her sight. Zee then refuses to kill her and instead decides to save her from Finn’s other employees who prefer to avoid having the slightest testimony. At the same time, Inspector Sey investigates this case and becomes close to the woman who is nicknamed the “Queen of the Dead” in the industry. This is ours Omar Sy national who plays this policeman ready to draw like Inspector Harry.

A ridiculous thing that becomes funny

Obviously, this remake of The killer It’s not to be taken too seriously. John Woo enjoys playing with genre clichés. Except not everything is intentionally funny. The exuberance of its staging in rather entertaining action sequences, punctuated by ridiculous shots or failed connections (sound and image). Of course there is pleasure in seeing Nathalie Emmanuel remove a saber from her dress and destroy her opponents, or even see Omar Sy participates in the hospital shooting. But between these passages the director seems to have abandoned his actors who are doing their best absurd dialogues.

Furthermore, despite efforts to include dialogue in French (which makes sense for French police officers), John Woo gets lost by suddenly switching to English during a conversation between Sey and his colleague Jax, played by Grégory Montel. All this is just a small part nothing big The killer. Taken with great detachment and putting aside its lengths, the feature film can become entertaining. The fact remains that, like the pigeons that replaced the doves, this remake is also from the original film a poor and late version.
