Tonight on TV: Before Barbie, Greta Gerwig broke a Toy Story 2 record with this nugget

Lady BirdGreta Gerwig’s first big hit

Long before he achieved monumental success with Barbie (2023), Greta Gerwig he had already gone behind the camera. First in duo with Joe Swanberg for Nights and weekends (2008), before launching himself into Lady Bird (2018). From this film, the director was struck by the sensitivity and emotion that emerged from it reaching adulthood brought by the excellent Saoirse Ronan (and with Timothée Chalamet in passing). The actress plays Christine, a teenager who wants to leave Sacramento to go to school in a bigger city where she can study art. Which doesn’t please his mother (Laurie Metcalf), with whom he argues from the first scene.

Behind the questions of teenagers, the stories of friendship and love, lies an extraordinary film about the mother/daughter relationship. Greta Gerwig perfectly captures the difficulties of communication through unspoken words or seemingly innocuous phrases. One of the most moving moments of Lady Bird occurs when the teenager is rehearsing and her mother, who wants her to be the best possible version of herself, is left speechless when her daughter responds: ” What if this was the best version? “. A silence that says a lot about a woman’s inability to express her feelings, even towards her daughter.

With a good balance between humor, emotion and empathy, Lady Bird it delighted us when it came out (see our review). We were not the only ones who were touched by the director’s semi-biographical proposal: despite the similarities between Greta Gerwig and the heroine, the teenager is rather someone she “would have liked to be”.

Stronger than Toy story 2 and 5 Oscar nominations

When it came out in cinemas, Lady Bird it had simply become the highest rated film of all time on the site Rotten tomatoes. A reference that brings together both professional criticism and public opinion. Before the Greta Gerwig film, this title was held by Toy story 2 (1999). For 18 years the animated feature has been ahead of all others thanks to its 163 positive votes and its 100% rating. Lady Bird he had finally beaten him 173 positive ratings and the same 100% positive review rate.

This score has since decreased slightly due to the increase in reviews. The note from Lady Bird remains impressive as, to date, the feature film has 99% positive reviews based on 401 reviews. Finally, although the film was less successful in France (“only” 305,000 admissions), it still managed to gross more than 78 million dollars. But above all it did not go unnoticed at the Oscars having been nominated in 5 categories including Best Film, Best Director for Greta Gerwig and Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan.
