Deadpool and Wolverine: Disney says no to the joke
Since his debut, Deadpool has been known for his unfiltered humor, meta commentary, and ability to break the fourth wall. In Deadpool and Wolverine, the third part of the saga and the first under the Disney umbrella, Wade Wilson continues to undermine everything and everyone – but it seems that this freedom of expression has found a limit.
A recently leaked excerpt of the script (via ScreenRant) reveals a deleted scene in which Deadpool reacted to the death of one of the X-Men. Frustrated, he issued this cutting response:
FUCK YOU! What, we can’t even afford another X-Man? Disney is so stingy. I can barely breathe with Mickey’s cock in my throat!
This joke combines both explicit vulgarity and direct criticism of Disney, its new owner. If Deadpool has already parodied the studios that produced it, this time the tone seems to have gone beyond what Disney was willing to accept.
A delicate but successful balance
The removal of this line clearly shows the dilemma Disney faces with Deadpool: how to maintain the subversive essence of the character while respecting the familiar image of the studio ? Ryan Reynolds had already explained that he had given him carte blanche, except for one joke. Having discovered this, we now understand why it was censored by the studio.
This anecdote clearly illustrates the balance that exists Deadpool and Wolverine he managed to create: a film rated for minors, irreverent and faithful to the spirit of the character, but with the limits imposed by Disney. Viewers largely approved of this mix, proving that it’s possible to integrate Deadpool into the Marvel universe without betraying what makes him so successful.
Let’s remember that the film was a phenomenon in global box officeraising revenue of $1.3 billion.
