The Holiday: definitely a cult romantic comedy
The film was released at Christmas 2006 The holiday has become a staple of romantic comedies. Directed by Nancy Meyers, this film features an all-star cast and offers a fascinating story that has captivated audiences around the world.
The plot revolves around two women, Iris (Kate Winslet) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), who decide to swap homes for the holidays to escape their complicated lives. Iris thus finds herself in Los Angeles in Amanda’s luxurious hometrailer producer for Hollywood, while Amanda explores the English countryside from Iris’s rustic home.
This chance meeting leads to surprising discoveries, unexpected friendships and, of course, budding romances. So, Iris, soft-hearted but destroyed by a previous relationship with her bossfinds comfort with Miles (Jack Black), a friend of Amanda’s. Meanwhile, Amanda discovers unexpected emotions as she falls under the spell of Graham (Jude Law), Iris’ brother.
Where was the film shot?
The film’s settings, be it the upscale Los Angeles neighborhood where Amanda’s home is located, or Iris’s cozy cottage, add greatly to the film’s charm. Production began in Los Angeles before moving to England for a month and then finishing filming in California.
To recreate the settings of the main characters, the production teams used several authentic locations and studio-built sets. For example, even though Amanda’s house is in Brentwood in the story, the outdoor scenes were filmed in front of architect Wallace Neff’s house in San Marinoa suburb adjacent to Pasadena, California (in 2018 the house was for sale for $12 million). The interiors of Amanda’s house were filmed at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City.
In England, some scenes were filmed in Godalming and Shere, picturesque villages in the county of Surrey. The production team built the exterior of the cottage in a field adjacent to St James’s Church in Shere. The interior sequences were shot in the studio. For Amanda and Graham’s walk scene, Nancy Meyers chose to treat the English garden in the form of a 1960s-style montage sequence, drawing inspiration from the work of Claude Lelouch, who she admires.
