A story inspired by the personal life of Sólveig Anspach
Young lovers draws its roots from a personal experience of the French-Icelandic director Sólveig Anspach. She was inspired by the romantic relationship experienced by her mother, the Icelandic architect Högna Sigurðardóttir, who, at the age of 79, fell in love with a doctor much younger than her. This unique story touched Anspach deeply, to the point that he wanted to bring it to the screen to celebrate love beyond social conventions and age differences.
In 2013, Sólveig Anspach began developing the project with her co-writer Agnès de Sacy and producer Patrick Sobelman. Unfortunately, in August 2015, Anspach died of a cancer recurrence, at the age of 54, leaving the project unfinished.
After the death of Sólveig Anspach, her friend and colleague Carine Tardieu was asked to take over the baton and continue the production of Young lovers. Tardieu, touched by the story and eager to honor the memory of his friend, accepts this delicate challenge. She surrounded herself with Agnès de Sacy and Raphaële Moussafir to finalize the script, respecting Anspach’s initial vision.
Love beyond conventions
Young lovers tells the story of Shauna Loszinsky, a 71-year-old woman played by Fanny Ardant, who meets by chance Pierre Escande, a 45-year-old doctor played by Melvil Poupaud. Fifteen years after their first meeting in the hospital, an unexpected romantic relationship is born between them, which challenges social norms and family expectations. This affair also shocks Jeanne, Pierre’s wife, played by Cécile de France.
The film delicately explores the themes of love and desire beyond social conventions, highlighting the prejudices linked to the age difference in romantic relationships. Director Carine Tardieu tackles the complexity of human feelings and illustrates how love can arise in unexpected ways, regardless of generational barriers. Fanny Ardant’s performance was praised and she received a César nomination for Best Actress for this role.
