A spectacular sequence for total immersion
From the first episode, At the dawn of America it immerses the viewer in a brutal and oppressive atmosphere, characteristic of the 19th century American West. The choice of sequence of shots – a long shot without apparent cuts – gives this sequence a rare intensity. This carefully prepared technical process allows you to feel every second of the attack as if you were there.
Peter Berg, known for his immersive approach to realism, said this scene was necessary months of preparation and the involvement of 280 extra to recreate the atmosphere. Every movement, from arrows hurtling through the air to bodies falling, has been meticulously choreographed to deliver a reenactment that is both artistic and historically significant.
A drama inspired by the Mountain Meadows massacre
This moment of extreme tension is not just a simple narrative device: it is directly inspired by Mountain meadow massacrea little-known episode in American history that occurred in 1857.
This tragic event saw a group of pioneers, mostly families seeking a new life in the West, attacked by members of the Nauvoo Legiona Mormon militia led by Brigham Young. Disguised as natives to sow confusion, the attackers stormed the convoy, resulting in the deaths of more than one hundred men, women and children.
The choice to approach this event in At the dawn of America it’s not trivial. Second Eric Newmannexecutive producer, this tragedy allows us to explore cultural and religious tensions of the time, highlighting the conflicts between settlers, indigenous populations and emerging religious movements.
To strengthen authenticity, the production team surrounded themselves with historical consultants AND cultural specialistsallowing a faithful reconstruction, both in costumes and dialogues. Peter Berg and his team also visited the actual locations of the massacre to capture the essence of this momentous event.
