SAG-AFTRA and Netflix have reached an interim agreement on a new contract to replace the new deal they signed in 2019.
The artists’ union announced the interim agreement, which will now go to the union’s national board and later members for approval on Tuesday. The National Council will discuss the next meeting and agreement on August 8. No other details about the deal are available at this time. the hollywood reporter Netflix was contacted for comment.
Earlier this summer, the SAG-AFTRA-Netflix deal was extended until Sunday, July 31st.
Netflix’s original 2019 deal excluded the streamer from contracts negotiated by major studios under the auspices of the negotiating body, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) with SAG-AFTRA. The network-specific deal included a live-action script, included voice acting and performance capture, and was described by then-Union President Gabriel Carteris as “essential”. The deal marked the first time Netflix has signed a SAG-AFTRA deal to work directly with its union artists.
Netflix’s negotiations with SAG-AFTRA began before major entertainment syndicate deals were discussed. The Directors Guild of America, Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA will soon negotiate successor deals to AMPTP’s flagship film and television pact, which expires next year.
