How did Kanye West help John Legend choose his stage name?

Born John Roger Stephens, John Legend had the help of a well-known musician to choose the stage name, which would become known throughout the world. According to Showbiz CheatSheet, Kanye West influenced the singer’s decision early in his career.

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Legend said it all started with a nickname among friends. “Well, it was a nickname that some friends started calling me by in the studio, just guys I was collaborating with. The first guy to call me that was J. Ivy. He’s an artist from Chicago. I met him through Kanye [West].”

Ivy invented the nickname because he thought Legend sounded like an old soul legend, so the musician came to be called that by friends. But the name gained new proportions when it was mentioned on a mixtape.

“And once, Kanye released a mixtape and called me a John Legend on the mixtape. And it started to spread among more people who were listening to our music. And then, at some point, I had to decide, ‘I’m going to keep John Stephens?'”

Legend made it clear that he saw no problems with his real name and confessed that he considered Legend an “audacious” name for someone who wasn’t signed to a record label.

“And so I was like, ‘I know it’s a bold move, but I’m not going to go into this hoping to fail. I’m going to go into it hoping to try to make a living out of it. And I spent the rest of my career trying to do that.
