James Gunn opted for a narrative choice made in “Superman”
Warner Bros. published the first film of the new DC Universe this summer, Superman. Adored by some, hated by others, James Gunn’s film has left few indifferent people. A choice, in particular, reacted fans of comics.
In the film, James Gunn opted for a controversial change on the origins of Superman/ Kal-El. The superhero was sent to Earth by his parents, Jor-El and Lara, with a message that he believes to be the following: to be a benevolent protector on the planet. Except for the fact that it is therefore revealed that the true message of his parents is to accuse Kal-El to guarantee the descendants of the Kryptonian heritage and direct the earth.
This message, received as shock from Superman, goes against the values of the superhero and his benevolent actions towards humans.

Some spectators could believe that the message had been modified by its enemy, Lex Luthor. However, James Gunn assures him, it is not and this narrative choice will not have changed in the future projects of DCU.
In a comment, the director explained his choice on Kal-El’s biological parents:
“This is probably the most controversial thing I did about the origins of Superman. I am a big Superman fan. I don’t want to change important, fundamental for him. His kindness, his generosity, the fact that he does not kill before
So, to justify yourself:
“The question is therefore: what can we add to the myth that is a little different, without basically change the character?” And if Clark’s parents, in the comics, are generally benevolent, it is not always the case. There have been stories in which … Jor-El is not always presented as a benevolent character, “he recalls.
“It is not something that will have changed later. It is the reality of Superman’s life. His parents sent him to Earth, mainly to save him, but they also helped him to perpetuate the Kryptonian inheritance and take control of the earth. And this is not perceived by Superman at all.” »» »
At the end of the film, Superman realizes that his link with his adoptive parents on Earth is stronger and bigger.
