Director of “Gladiator” and “Alien” criticized current cinema by stating that “we are drowning in mediocrity”
During a conversation at the British Film Institute in London, last Sunday (5), Ridley Scott (Gladiator 2) did not spare words when talking about the current state of the film industry. The British director, responsible for classics like Gladiator and Alien: The Eighth Passengerhe said that most films produced today is “a crapAnd that excess of productions has taken the cinema to a sea of mediocrity.
“The number of films made today, literally worldwide – millions. Not thousands, millions… and most are a crap”Said the filmmaker, in conversation with his son Luke Scottaccording to the newspaper Subway.
Scott It also criticized the excessive use of digital effects, which, according to him, end up masking the lack of good stories. “Many films today are saved – and are more expensive – because of digital effects. The problem is that they do not have a great story on the role first. You need to put on paper!“, he said.
At 87, the director still maintains an active career, but confessed that he has found little pleasure in watching contemporary productions. “We are drowning in mediocrity”He said.”So what I do – it’s horrible to say that – but I started watching my own movies, and actually they are very good! And don’t age.”
Scott He said he recently reviewed Black Falcon in Danger (2001) and was surprised by the result: “I thought: How did I the hell I could do this?”He joked. Despite the criticism, the director acknowledged that there are still exceptions in the current scenario. From time to time a good movie comes, and it is almost a relief to see that there is still someone doing something of quality.”
Even with over five decades of career, Ridley Scott stated that retiring would be “impossible“. After the launch of Gladiator II in 2024, starring MESCAL PAUL (Normal People), he revealed that he has already completed his next project, the post-apocalyptic science fiction film The Dog Starswith JACOB ELORDI (The Horro dos Ventos Uivant), and that works in the script of a third Gladiator.
“Paul’s character is still out there, and technically is the emperor of Rome”, Said the director.I have a very clear idea of what I want to do – but I won’t tell you, otherwise you steal!”
