What is the story of The Secret Agent?

In The Secret Agent, Marcelo (Wagner Moura) is a university professor, who flees to Recife to escape government agents who are looking for him for subversive activities. However, upon arriving in the city, where he believes he is safe until he can flee the country with his young son, he discovers that he has been sworn to death by an old enemy. Watch the trailer:
