Abolition of the Supreme Court Roe vs Wade gave a new intensity If these walls could talkA 1996 HBO anthology film about three women at different times (1950s, 1970s, and 1990s) and their experiences with abortion.
Demi Moore, Sissy Spacek and Cheri starred in a segment, with Cheri directing her part. Cherry and Moore also served as executive producers on the project. Co-writer and co-director Nancy Savoca recalls how the film broke new ground, but also provoked a backlash.
“We were always nervous,” Savoca says of the reaction to the film, noting that “there were protesters when we were filming.” He adds that one of the actors in the film lost a longtime commercial job for working on the film and says it was the only project he did that didn’t involve product placement because no brand wanted to be associated with the stories. Moore plays a nurse who performs an illegal abortion in 1952, Spacek a mother of four who suddenly becomes pregnant in 1974, and Cher a doctor who performs an abortion when protests erupt outside in 1996.
Savoca calls HBO “very, very brave” to release the film, which received four Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Television Film. She hopes more studios will follow suit: “Storytelling is what makes people really empathize and understand something beyond politics.”
