Britney Spears is celebrating after returning to music following the release of her Elton John duet ‘Hold Me Closer’.
In a video posted to social media, Spears shared a message with John with a British accent. “Hello Sir Elton John, we are number one in 40 countries. Shit,” he said.
Spears, who said she was in the bathroom while shooting the video, celebrated the song’s release, saying she would “have the best day”.
Sharing the video on his social media account, John said: “Hey Britney! Thanks for this message. You made my day!! We hope everyone has the best day dancing to our song!”
“Hold Me Closer” marks Spears’ first musical release in six years; their previous release was a 2016 album. glory, which was re-released in 2020 with three new songs, and the first since ending its 13-year hiatus. Ahead of the release of “Hold Me Closer”, Spears thanked John for asking her to join her on the song and expressed that she was “overwhelmed” regarding the collaboration as “a big deal”.

In an interview published on Thursday, John discussed working with Spears on the song. “Everyone said they thought I couldn’t sing anymore,” he said. The Guardian. “But I said he was brilliant when he started, so I think he might. And he did, and I was so impressed with him.
Spears’ husband Sam Asgari shared the cover of “Hold Me Closer”, which features childhood photos of Spears and Jon, on his Instagram, writing, “Proud husband moment!” He also shared a music video over the car’s speakers: “I’ve been listening to this all night!” He later shared a screenshot of the iTunes playlist showing “Hold Me Closer” at the top of the list. “Already number 1,” he wrote.
Spears’ return to music was also celebrated by fans online with the hashtag #WelcomeBackBritney on Twitter.
