Aside from hosting the Emmys, of course, what is the most memorable moment in your career?
I’m glad I have some. The Emmy opened in 2018 with Kate McKinnon, making it the longest-running show. SNL cast and book All this [see page 112] “I don’t take any of them for granted. I still remember the days before I could accomplish anything and the madness felt somehow disgusting.
What are your pre-show rituals?
I pray and stuff like that, but it’s not like if I don’t, my whole idea is going to fall apart. I have habits like singing my first lines in my head. And I don’t like to eat before big shows; It’s not the best habit to eat late at night, but you don’t want to get a stomachache from those butterflies.
This is the first major award show since the Oscars; Do you feel pressured to talk about “Slap” in your monologue?
I think it’s my job to find out. SmackDown was part of my monologue at the NHL Awards recently, so I don’t think I’m going to repeat that joke. And there’s chaos too, but it can be very depressing for the room.
you trust someone SNL Staff for advice?
No, just because I don’t think you can satisfy people’s advice. I just want to share credit with the writers and producers, no one outside of this band. I want to prove to myself that I can do this.
What are you going to do to celebrate after you’re done?
I intend to continue after the ceremony. It will be a special night. And especially if it goes well, I don’t know how I’m going to sleep afterwards. The first thing I’m going to do is switch to my star. [on the Hollywood Walk of Fame] And maybe go live on Instagram.
tell us about your favorite SNL After the party sometime.
This is probably the last season finale that Maya Rudolph performed with her Prince cover band. I love him very much and my whole life is thanks to him. I’ve played him a million times, but I’ve never seen him in rockstar mode. It was amazing, amazing, amazing. Write three times!
