West End theaters in London and elsewhere will have performances scheduled on Thursday, but many will pay tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth, according to the London Theater and the British Theater Society, two groups representing the industry.
“Many theaters across the country will dim their lights tonight and observe a moment of silence, play the national anthem and open condolence books before the performance as a show of respect,” SOLT said in a statement.
Theatrical performances will continue during the “Official Period of Mourning”, under the direction of the country’s Ministry of Digital, Culture, Media and Sports. However, a spokesperson for SOLT and Theater UK said he expected some cinemas to close on the day of the funeral, which is expected to take place 10 days after the monarch’s death.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The theater industry is grateful for the support and patronage that Her Majesty has shown throughout her life. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Royal Family at this time of national mourning,” said Stephanie Sir MBE and John Gilchrist, Joint Presidents of the UK Theater, and Eleanor Lloyd, President of the London Theater Society.
Several West End shows currently running joined in the condolences.
