Roger Waters asks Vladimir Putin to ‘ceasefire’ in war against Ukraine

Text for Vladimir Putin came after Roger Waters wrote open letter to Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine

After having canceled shows in Poland for criticizing Ukraine in an open letter to the Ukrainian First Lady, Olena Zelenska, Roger Watersformer bassist pink Floydpublished another text, but this time for Vladimir Putinpresident of Russia. The musician asked Putin “ceasefire” in the war between the two countries.

The new open letter was published on social media, and Waters explained how he was encouraged to write to the Russian president after they criticized the text made to the Olena Zelenska. Opposition arguments questioned the musician’s motive to address only one side of the conflict.

The artist stated how in the months since the Russia invaded the Ukraine in February 2022, he tried to “use [minha] little influence to encourage a ceasefire and a diplomatic agreement that meets the security needs of the Ukraine and gives Russian Federation.”

Then, Roger Waters took the opportunity to address Vladimir Putin. “Would you like to see an end to this war? If you responded and said, ‘Yes please,’ that would immediately make things a lot easier,” he wrote. “If you said, ‘The Russian Federation has no territorial interest other than the security of the Russian-speaking populations of the Crimea, donetsk and Lugansk.’ That would help too.”

Furthermore, Waters talked about the notion that Putin and his forces “want to invade the whole Europestarting with Poland and the rest of the Baltic states. Can we all stop playing the desperately dangerous game of nuclear chicken with which hawks on both sides of the Atlantic look so comfortable, and do that. Yeah, just blow each other and the world to smithereens.”

The artist also encouraged the Russian president to issue a message of public assurance that the Russia has no interest in invading the rest of the Europebecause he has “children and grandchildren, just like most of my brothers and sisters around the world and none of us would like that outcome.”

Roger Waters calls for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine

In the final stretch of the open letter the Vladimir Putin, Roger Waters commented on a possible negotiation between the warring countries: “If I read your previous speeches correctly, would you like to negotiate a state of neutrality for a sovereign neighbor with Ukraine? Is that correct? Assuming such a peace could be negotiated, it would have to include an absolutely binding agreement not to invade anyone ever again.”

I know I know, USA and NATO invade other sovereign countries for whatever reason, or for a few barrels of oil, but that doesn’t mean you should. Your invasion of Ukraine took me completely by surprise, it was a hideous war of aggression, provoked or not.
