James Gunn announced a new Superman movie, but without Henry Cavill

In the past few hours James Gunnco-president and CEO of DC Studios together Peter Safranannounced the first project in the new DC Comics cinematic universe, namely a new film about Superman. This news, which is sure to make fans happy, also brings bad news. Despite last October’s announcements and his appearance in the post-credits scene of Black Adams, Henry Cavill will not return as Superman in the film. This new film will be written directly by James Gunn but its director has not yet been found.

This, along with the removal of Wonder Woman 3makes us understand that with their new management Gunn and Safran want to close the DCEU’s past, to launch a new cinematic universe.

Below is the complete content of tweets by James Gunn:

“Peter and I have the blueprint for the new DC universe ready, and we couldn’t be more proud of it; we will be able to share some information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.

Among those on the list is Superman. In the early stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so Henry Cavill will not play the character again.

But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we are big fans of him. We talked with him about an interesting set of possibilities to work together in the future“.

Following Gunn’s announcement, Henry Cavill also released a statement via a post on his Instagram profile. The actor thanked fans for their support and wished Gunn and Safran all the best for the future of the DC Cinematic Universe.

You can read the content of the post below Henry Cavill:

“I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and I have some sad news for everyone. After all, I’m not coming back as Superman. While I was told by the studio to announce my return in October, before their acquisition, this news is not the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is one of those happenings. I respect that.

James and Peter have a universe to build. Good luck to them and everyone who will join the new universe.

For those who have been around me for years… we can cry a little, but then we have to remember… Superman is still around. Everything it stands for still exists, and the examples it gives us are still there! My time to don the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for will not pass. It’s been a fun ride with you all, but now it’s time to move on.”
