The Last of Us viewership surpasses Game of Thrones in HBO premiere

With 4 million viewers, The Last of Us was behind spin-off House of the Dragon

Premiere numbers The Last of Us at HBO were publicized and surprised. The adaptation of the game of the same name produced by Naughty Dog added 4.7 million viewers during the first day of airing of the pilot episode on Sunday, 15 (via indiewire).

The audience calculations involve the audience that followed the HBOas well as users of HBO Max who attended on opening day. This is the second biggest debut of HBO since Boardwalk Empire: The Smuggling Empire (2010).

The site recalls that, more than a decade ago, before the popularization of streaming, TV viewing at launch represented the majority of an episode’s audience. With the material available at HBO Maxonly 20% – 40% of the audience happens on the series premiere.

House of the Dragon won the largest audience after 2010. The production had 9.9 million viewers on the first day, in August last year. game of Thrones was not very far from The Last of Usadding up to 4.2 million.

Featuring iconic scenes from the game – including snippets that only appear in the DLC Left Behind (2014) – teaser gives even more evidence that the production intends to remain faithful to the base material. Next episode should also mark more frequent appearances of the clickers (more advanced type of infected).
