After the crisis experienced in the first half of 2022, the streaming platform introduced a cheaper subscription with advertising

2022 was not a good year for Netflix. The initial quarter represented the first time that the streaming platform recorded a loss of subscribers: 200 thousand. In the second three-month period, another 970,000 people canceled their accounts.

This set off a warning signal for them to look for other ways to gain new subscribers, making up for the losses. In the third quarter of 2022, an expansion of the service in Asia was mainly responsible for the gain of 2.4 million new users. The projection for the final set of months of the year was an expansion of 4.5 million.

To achieve this goal, the streaming platform launched a cheaper plan in November that includes ads when playing movies and series. It seemed like a desperate move – and it was heavily criticized especially for not making the entire collection available – but it ended up working. It even went beyond the previously mentioned projection of 4.5 million.

According to The Hollywood Reportera Netflix received 7.6 million new subscribers in the final quarter of 2022. There was no official explanation for the reasons that led to the rise, but it is clear that such an upward curve in the graph allows us to conclude that the plan with ads is a success at the end of the accounts.

Password sharing blocking

Another controversial measure that could ultimately have positive effects is the decision to block password sharing. In November last year, the company confirmed that it intends to prevent the practice initially in the United States, after tests carried out in Latin American countries.

In US territory, the idea is that those who use the service at different addresses pay a fee of US$ 3 per zip code. The novelty should reach other territories on the planet, such as Brazil, soon.
