August delivers a packed slate of streaming television, with several long-awaited returning series arriving alongside high-profile new premieres.
The Big Returns
Ted Lasso comes back for a fourth season on Apple TV+ on August 5, two years after showrunners Bill Lawrence and Jason Sudeikis appeared to wrap the story with the American coach leaving Britain. The new season finds the title character coaching a women’s football team, with many familiar faces expected to return based on the trailer.
One Hundred Years of Solitude reaches its conclusion on Netflix on August 5. The second and final season picks up with lead character Emiliano having become a military dictator. Gabriel Garcia Marquez refused to permit a film adaptation of the novel during his lifetime, believing the format could not preserve his style and the story’s details.
Lioness returns for a third season on Paramount+ on August 2, after a two-year break. The spy action series, created by Taylor Sheridan, again stars Zoe Saldana, Laysla De Oliveira, Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman.
Reacher arrives for its fourth season on Amazon Prime Video on August 12, adapting Lee Child’s thirteenth novel in the Jack Reacher series. Alan Ritchson returns in the lead role, with most of the supporting cast replaced as usual.
Outer Banks ends its run with a fifth and final season on Netflix on August 20. The adventure drama about teenagers from the North Carolina coast, starring Chase Stokes, Madeline Cline, Madison Bailey, and Jonathan Daviss, promises a harsh conclusion.
Dark Matter gets a second season on Apple TV+ on August 28. Blake Crouch, who wrote the source novel, remains as showrunner, with Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly returning in the lead roles. The new season moves beyond the events of the book.
New Premieres
The Shards debuts on Hulu on August 5, created by Ryan Murphy alongside author Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote American Psycho. Based on Ellis’s novel of the same name, the series follows a group of privileged teenagers at an elite Los Angeles private school in the 1980s whose lives unravel after a mysterious new student arrives, one the teens suspect may be connected to a series of ritual murders.
The Last House premieres on Netflix on August 7. The supernatural thriller stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as members of a suburban American family trapped in their home by a mysterious force. The premise draws on themes of pandemic-era lockdowns, with the confinement stretching not months but years. Louis Leterrier, who directed Fast X, helmed all episodes.
Lanterns premieres on HBO Max on August 16, from showrunners Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy. The series places DC Comics’ Green Lanterns in a true-crime detective framework as they investigate a series of mysterious killings on Earth. The project spent seven years in development and changed concept, showrunners, and cast along the way. Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, and Nathan Fillion star.
The Whisper Man, produced by the Russo brothers, premieres on Netflix on August 28. The dark detective thriller stars Robert De Niro, Michael Keaton, and Adam Scott as a widowed writer whose eight-year-old son goes missing, prompting him to turn to his retired detective father for help. Their investigation leads them back to a serial killer case closed a decade earlier. The series is based on Alex North’s bestselling novel of the same name.
