Alexey Pyregov dismisses secrets myth under anesthesia

Anesthesiologist Alexey Pyregov has dismissed the widespread belief that patients can accidentally reveal their deepest secrets while under general anesthesia during medical procedures.

Speaking to Russian news outlet KP.RU, Pyregov explained that modern anesthetic drug combinations do not contain properties resembling a truth serum, making it impossible for individuals to disclose confidential personal information while unconscious.

Although patients cannot consciously articulate secrets, Pyregov noted that some individuals do speak while undergoing surgery. He clarified that any vocalizations produced under sedation are entirely unintelligible because anesthesia fundamentally alters how the brain transmits neural signals.

According to Pyregov, it is impossible for medical staff or onlookers to construct a logical narrative from these fragmentary utterances. He shared that patients frequently behave outside their normal character, noting that normally polite individuals may suddenly begin swearing, while others unexpectedly start speaking in English.

Medical researchers categorize such behavior as a disinhibition response caused by central nervous system depressants. During general anesthesia, anesthetic agents temporarily interrupt communication between different cortical regions of the brain. This loss of executive neural control can lead to involuntary vocalizations or rapid shifts in language usage without any coherent thought process behind them.

Dispelling Myths Around Surgical Sedation

Pyregov also addressed another common misconception surrounding surgical care, firmly rejecting the claim that undergoing general anesthesia reduces a person's life expectancy by five years.

The physician assured that modern anesthetic procedures are carefully designed to protect patients during major surgical interventions rather than cause long-term physical damage to the body.

General anesthesia is a medically controlled state of temporary unconsciousness, pain relief, and muscle relaxation administered by specialist physicians called anesthesiologists. Before the development of modern anesthetics, major operations carried severe risks of surgical shock and trauma. Today, anesthesiologists continuously monitor vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygenation levels to ensure patient safety throughout every phase of treatment.

Historical myths regarding a truth serum stem from early twentieth-century experiments with chemical compounds such as sodium thiopental and various barbiturates. While popular culture often depicted these substances as truth drugs, scientific consensus has long established that sedatives produce confusion and unreliability rather than verifiable truth.

Recognizing Cardiac Risk Factors

In addition to anesthesia safety, Russian medical experts have recently highlighted key indicators for managing critical health emergencies. Previously, cardiologist and anesthesiologist-resuscitator Anton Vakhlyaev outlined methods for identifying an impending heart attack, pointing out that the onset of angina chest pain often serves as an early harbinger of cardiovascular pathology.

Angina pectoris occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle is restricted, causing discomfort, pressure, or squeezing sensations in the chest. Medical authorities emphasize that recognizing these warning signs promptly can allow patients to seek urgent emergency care before severe heart damage occurs.
