Gastroenterologist Anastasia Gostrous from SM-Clinic told Lenta.ru that abdominal heaviness often stems from digestive motility disorders rather than overeating.
Gostrous warned that a condition known as functional dyspepsia can make a person feel full after taking only a few spoonfuls of soup.

According to Gostrous, functional dyspepsia is diagnosed when digestive organs appear healthy without ulcers, tumors, or inflammation, but fail to work properly. She explained that the underlying issue is impaired motility, in which the stomach contracts poorly, propels food slowly, or remains overly relaxed.
Functional dyspepsia and digestive motility
Gastrointestinal motility refers to the rhythmic contraction of muscles in the digestive tract that moves food from the stomach into the intestines. In medical reference literature, functional dyspepsia is classified as a persistent motility disorder of the upper abdomen, where patients experience early satiety and abdominal fullness despite normal physical organ structures. Diagnosing the condition typically involves ruling out structural diseases through endoscopic exams or imaging.
Gostrous noted that in patients with functional dyspepsia, the sensation of discomfort or heaviness develops within minutes of starting a meal, regardless of portion size.
Enzyme deficiency represents another primary cause of abdominal heaviness without excessive food consumption, Gostrous stated. She said that if the pancreas operates sluggishly or produces insufficient digestive enzymes, even simple meals fail to break down correctly.
Enzyme deficiency and gut dysbiosis
The pancreas is a vital organ located behind the stomach that secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine to break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. When enzyme production is insufficient, known medically as pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, unabsorbed food particles pass into the small intestine and ferment, triggering gas formation and discomfort.
Dysbacteriosis can also provoke heavy abdominal sensations, Gostrous added. She explained that the gut microbiota is directly responsible for nutrient assimilation and gas formation during the digestive process.
The human gut microbiome consists of trillions of microorganisms residing in the intestinal tract. When the balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria is disrupted, a condition known as gut dysbiosis, standard everyday meals can trigger a strong gastrointestinal reaction.

Evaluating gastrointestinal health
Separately, gastroenterologist Sergey Vyalov previously shared a simple informal test to evaluate gastrointestinal health. He suggested eating herring and cucumber together and drinking milk immediately afterward to observe how the digestive system responds.
Vyalov, a Russian specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology, explained that a healthy digestive tract should process the unusual combination without sudden distress, whereas underlying motility or enzyme issues may trigger rapid discomfort.
