Biochemist Annie Curtis and molecular biologist Cansu Gorgun told the Independent that sleep plays a key role in maintaining joint and bone health.

The experts stated that bone tissue undergoes continuous renewal throughout a person's life through two types of cells: osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Osteoclasts remove old and damaged bone cells, while osteoblasts create new cells. Curtis explained that this cycle follows a daily rhythm, with bone tissue breakdown usually peaking at the beginning of the day and bone formation peaking at the end of the day.

Melatonin production and sleep habits

The specialists emphasized that the entire process is linked to sleep rhythms and the production of melatonin. They suggested that the hormone, produced at night, can suppress osteoclasts and stop bone destruction. Gorgun explained that this mechanism clarifies why older people experience faster destruction of bones and joints, as melatonin production decreases with age and circadian rhythms are often disrupted.

The experts noted that anything that helps establish a sleep routine will benefit bone health, advising people to maintain a schedule, avoid gadgets for an hour before bedtime, and try to get enough sleep. Separately, therapist Maxim Gubka previously explained that frequent nighttime awakenings may be caused by stress or hidden dehydration.
