The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens has been shortlisted for the European Art Museum Award 2026, organizers have announced.
The Greek capital's flagship venue, known as EMST, is one of just six institutions selected from an exceptionally strong international field of candidates by an expert jury.
The shortlist features prominent European cultural institutions. Competitors nominated alongside EMST include the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the new FENIX Migration Museum in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and the National Gallery of Slovenia in Ljubljana.
Founded as Greece's premier public institution for modern visual culture, EMST is located in central Athens. The museum serves as the country's national venue for acquiring, preserving, and exhibiting contemporary artwork from both domestic and international creators.
Shortlist selection and jury criteria
According to the European Museum Academy, the organization overseeing the competition, this year's contest reached an exceptionally high standard. The nine-member jury of museum experts from across Europe faced a difficult choice in narrowing the field down to six shortlisted candidates.
Samuel Gallacher, the president of the jury, said that the panel looks for art museums that do not limit themselves to creating a superficial impression. He explained that judges seek institutions striving for a meaningful and lasting connection with their audience.
Gallacher added that whether collections feature historic works by major artists, representatives of Modernism, or young emerging creators, the curatorial practice across all six shortlisted museums serves as a model of excellence. He noted that their work is distinguished by its vital relevance to issues confronting modern society, qualities that the academy is proud to recognize and highlight through the Art Museum Award.
The shortlisted contenders represent diverse cultural traditions across Europe. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is the national museum of the Netherlands, world-famous for its masterworks from the Dutch Golden Age, while FENIX in Rotterdam is a landmark museum devoted to human migration. The National Gallery of Slovenia in Ljubljana houses the country's premier collection of historical fine art.
Social role of modern museums
The European Art Museum Award focuses specifically on highlighting the social role of art institutions. Organizers stated that the award honors museum initiatives that place art within innovative, pioneering, and creative frameworks to engage critically with contemporary social issues.
The award is grounded in democratic and humanistic values. According to the European Museum Academy, these principles include social justice, public participation, inclusion, gender equality, racial justice, community empowerment, sustainability, and resilience.
Organizers emphasized that these core values must serve as the driving force behind new museological practices for the 21st century. The overarching goal of the award is to highlight new standards and examples that can inspire art museums worldwide.
European Museum Academy structure
The organizing body, the European Museum Academy, is a non-profit foundation established to represent museums at an international level. It promotes research in museology, the theoretical study of museum organization, and museography, the practical craft of exhibition design, treating both as high-prestige cultural activities.
The academy acts as a forum for constructive criticism, public dialogue, and professional exchange regarding new exhibitions and museum projects. The organization aims to support the creation and development of both new and older museums as agents of social change. Forty countries are currently represented within the academy.
The award jury consists of nine European museum specialists: Bernhart Schwenk, Danièle Wagener, Delphine Munro, John Leighton, Karen Holdaway Grøn, Louisa Leventis, Samuel Gallacher as jury president, and Tijana Palkovljević Bugarski.
The winner of the European Art Museum Award 2026 will be officially announced on September 26, 2026.
