A Great British Bake Off contestant was left in tears after her cake crashed to the floor during the Channel 4 show's first episode on Tuesday night.
Molly accidentally lost her grip on her freshly baked sponges, sending the stout cake clattering onto the tent floor with steam rising from the warm bake.
The mishap occurred during the first challenge of the series, where bakers were tasked with recreating an iconic stout cake recipe in tribute to new judge Nigella Lawson's debut appearance on the programme.
Looking up from the ruined cake, Molly said, "I'm going to cry," as fellow contestants turned around to see the disaster unfold in the famous marquee.
Overcome with emotion, Molly walked outside for fresh air where host Alison Hammond stepped in to console her. Molly explained that she had been "only using one oven glove" when the baking tin "got caught on the oven shelf."
Judging panel updates and feud rumours
The new series of The Great British Bake Off features celebrity cook Nigella Lawson joining returning judge Paul Hollywood, alongside co-hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding in the tent.
Lawson was announced as Prue Leith's replacement in January after the restaurateur decided to step down following a nine-year tenure on the Channel 4 show.
Ahead of Tuesday's launch at 8pm, rumours had circulated regarding a supposed "bitter battle of egos" between Lawson and Hollywood. Daily Mail reporter Katie Hind cited a source who claimed Lawson viewed Hollywood's practice of commuting to the tent in a private helicopter as "gauche and silly."
Speculation intensified after the two judges did not stand next to one another on the red carpet at Channel 4's official launch event earlier this month.
However, Hammond appeared to dismiss claims of friction by posting a behind-the-scenes photograph on Instagram showing Paul, Noel, and Nigella all sitting balanced on her knee.
Hammond captioned the image: "We always believe in supporting each other on bake off! Bake off starts tonight on @channel4 @nigellalawson @paul.hollywood @noel_fielding don't miss it. It's a goodie @britishbakeoff." She later added in the comments section: "So excited for tonight ! You will all just love Nigella."
Lawson responded to the post, describing it as a "great, love-filled BTS moment!" Comedian Alan Carr commented "I'm so excited!!!" while 2024 winner Georgie Grasso wrote "Cannot wait to watch you all."
The line-up changes also extend to spin-off show Extra Slice, which has been replaced by Second Helpings. Original presenters Jo Brand and Tom Allen have stepped aside, with Judi Love and Jon Richardson taking over hosting duties.
Meet the new line-up of bakers
Clara, a 24-year-old marketing graduate from Hertfordshire, originally hails from Aveiro in Portugal and moved to the UK at age 18. She took up cake making two years ago as a creative outlet, recreating Portuguese classics like Tarte de Nata for her British fiancé Kieran and his family. Clara, who loves chaotic and colourful designs, believes "the first bite of a bake is always with the eye."
Reflecting on her time on the show, Clara said: "I cannot explain the amazing chemistry we all had together, I think we were all bonded by the trauma of practising so many times and we were so eager to just connect and talk to someone who was going through this process as well."
Connie, 63, works as an NHS hospital discharge lead and uses baking to relax after busy workdays. Known as the "cake lady," her specialty is hearty carrot cakes with flavours such as rum fruit, lemon, and lavender. She also operates a music centre in London alongside Myke, her husband of 23 years.
Connie initially missed out on the final 12 roster and was placed on the standby baker list. "As the deadline approached, I accepted that it probably wasn't going to happen. I genuinely believed the chances of being called were incredibly slim, so I moved on and put it to the back of my mind. Then everything changed with one phone call," she said.
She added: "When I was told that a place had become available and that I could take part, I was completely speechless. The news felt surreal, and for a while I couldn't quite process what I was hearing. I kept checking that it was real because it seemed too good to be true."
Danni, a 25-year-old Dorset resident, works as an HGV service centre administrator with their father. Danni enjoys countryside foraging for ingredients such as magnolia, chestnut, and dandelion, combining them with ube and red bean paste. Their other interests include anime doodling and soldering broken traces on a Commodore 64 motherboard.
Speaking about Lawson, Danni said: "It was so nice to get to see Nigella walk into the tent, she had such a sense of wonder about her when she took her place, and it felt so right for her to be there. She took to it like a duck to water! She truly is wonderful, very genuine in her approach to baking and you can tell just how much she cares about taking on board what she's tasting and helping you with improving it even more!"
Drag performers, garment workers and accessibility coordinators
Gabe, 32, is a theatre show producer and drag performer known as Blü Romantic who describes themselves as the "daddy of Birmingham drag." Based in the West Midlands, Gabe lives with two partners, Ellis and Tyler, and favours savoury, meat-filled bakes and meringue after first falling in love with baking while watching the debut episode of Bake Off as a 13-year-old.
Gabe previously met host Hammond on live television: "I have met Alison before, she famously smacked my bum, live on Channel 4 while I was in drag on Late Night Lycett, so I was excited to take our relationship to the next level." Gabe added of Fielding: "As a Mighty Boosh obsessed teen, who grew into a Mighty Boosh obsessed adult I was so hyped to meet Noel. I was so ready to cream pie myself and impersonate the moon with him!"
Gary, a 67-year-old retired garment technologist from Nottinghamshire, lives with Donna, his wife of over 30 years. Gary bought his first cookbook five years ago, focusing his traditional baking style on citrus flavours and presentation.
Gary recalled joking with host Noel Fielding about his physical resemblance to Paul Hollywood and whether they were "connected at birth." He also shared a moment with Hammond: "When I met Alison I was concentrating on baking and noticed her big friendly smile when she came towards me. I also did some Northern Soul dancing with Alison which was an experience. I was showing her how to do this as I love Northern Soul."
Molly, a 31-year-old accessibility coordinator from London, was introduced to baking by her grandmother as a child. She developed her skills further in 2020 while managing health issues. Outside of baking classic flavours, Molly is a Formula 1 enthusiast who clears her schedule for every race and is currently working through a 350,000 cross-stitch landscape of Rivendell.
Molly noted of the new judge: "It was almost reassuring that it was Nigella's first time in the tent too. It's a daunting experience, but knowing it was new to her as well felt like we were experiencing things together."
Students, post-producers and project planners
Moyin, 22, is a political economy student from Essex who balances his studies with a part-time job, baking, and competitive athletics. A 100m U20 County Champion sprinter whose pre-race playlist includes Afrobeats, R&B, and conscious rap, Moyin lives with his mother, sister, and grandmother while frequently visiting family in Nigeria, Canada, and the United States. He learned to bake at age five with his mother and mastered macarons by 14, incorporating Nigerian ingredients like grains of paradise and groundnuts into his bakes.
Recalling his late arrival at the contestant hotel, Moyin said: "I was so worried about meeting them but I don't think I could have a better bunch of people. We met in the hotel and I was the last person there because I was late. I remember walking in and being so overwhelmed because there were so many faces and I was just thinking what the actual heck is going on. I remember sitting on a table with Gabe and Nikki, from the first time I met those two we have been up to no good."
Mo, a 21-year-old law student from the West Midlands aspiring to become a solicitor, began baking using boxed vanilla cake mixes from his local corner shop. Now dedicated to weightlifting at the gym, he bakes precise cakes combining Asian flavours with British classics.
On meeting Lawson, Mo remarked: "I was very excited to meet Nigella as I'd remember my mom loved watching her growing up and having her tv shows on in the background while playing. It was interesting to see her find her place working with Paul and I loved the different perspectives and preferences they had as they didn't always agree."
Nikki, a 50-year-old advertising post-producer, uses baking as therapy while listening to R&B and classical music. A former podium dancer at Ziggy's Nightclub in Basingstoke who still goes dancing with her cousins, Nikki has been with her partner Tom for 22 years and has a 16-year-old daughter, Ava.
Nikki shared a moment with judge Hollywood: "One of my favourite moments was breaking the ice with Paul during the first episode. He took a bite of my Self Portrait Showstopper, paused, and just stared off into the distance with this thoughtful look on his face. I couldn't resist and said, 'Where's it taking you, Paul?' He snapped out of his daze and deadpanned, 'It's taking me to Weight Watchers!' I burst out laughing!"
Shannon, a 29-year-old project planner and nature lover, lives in the countryside with her fiancé Scott and two dogs. Taught by her grandmother, her baking style is rustic and whimsical. She once famously rode a horse through a drive-thru window.
Describing her baking, Shannon said: "I think my secret superpower is the way my baking makes people feel at home. I love creating flavours that take people back to happy memories, those little moments of nostalgia that make you pause and smile. My fiancé Scott always says that when I make fresh bread with proper salted butter, it tastes exactly like how his grandad used to make it. Hearing that brings me so much joy, because it's like my baking gives him a moment with someone he loved. My superpower is bringing smiles out of nowhere, letting the good vibes flow, and helping people make new happy memories while revisiting old ones. That's the magic of baking for me."
Tom, a 25-year-old hairdresser from West Yorkshire who describes himself as a Northern Diva, started baking at his grandmother's house aged six while his brother attended football matches. Tom, who recently spent seven months travelling in Southeast Asia with his boyfriend Alex, tests his creations on salon colleagues.
Tom described receiving the call to join the series: "I have dreamed about being on Bake Off for so long that I kind of knew one day I would get on. I never imagined it would be the first year I applied that I would get on. I couldn't believe it when I got the call. Throughout the whole application process whenever one step was completed, I just thought to myself right that will be the last one and they won't be contacting me again but I couldn't believe it when it kept on going. I think I just said omg omg omg omg omg over and over again, then I bought a bottle of prosecco on my way home to surprise my boyfriend with the news."
Yannis, a 28-year-old paediatric doctor and Bhangra dancer living in London, was born in Vienna and moved to the UK at age 11. He aims to break stereotypes surrounding Bangladeshi men in the kitchen, recalling his earliest baking memory making Bhapa Pitha with his grandmother.
Yannis selected Lawson's work as his preferred desert island reading: "Her books were part of what made me fall deeper in love with baking, so if I'm going to be stranded on an island, I at least want some comforting inspiration with me."
