DC has continued preparing new animated productions focused on Batman following a wide variety of reception for recent films and television series in the format. While audiences have long sought an R-rated live-action Batman movie, studio plans for live-action theatrical releases remain unchanged.

Batman, created for DC Comics as the heroic secret identity of billionaire Bruce Wayne, is one of the most prominent characters in comic book history. DC Studios oversees the development of animated and live-action feature films based on the publisher's character catalog.

Live-Action Batman Movies and DC Universe Plans

The next expected live-action Batman movie will star Robert Pattinson, who will return to the role following director Matt Reeves' 2022 film The Batman. Reeves' initial film functioned as a gritty crime thriller, coming closest to an adult-oriented Batman story, though studio executives avoided an R rating to protect box office earnings.

Pattinson's ongoing series will have no connection to the newly launched DC Universe franchise. Instead, the DC reboot orchestrated by filmmaker James Gunn will introduce a separate version of Batman in the upcoming project The Brave and the Bold.

Upcoming Clayface Project in the DCU

Fans seeking adult-oriented DC content will only have to wait two months for another R-rated project set within the Batman universe. The upcoming movie, belonging directly to the DCU, will focus on the shapeshifting antagonist Clayface.

Bruce Wayne is not expected to appear in the Clayface film. However, the production will mark a firm step forward in anticipating Batman's eventual debut within James Gunn's rebooted universe.
