Why is the French manicure so called – although it was not invented in France

Do you think French is a classic manicure for all French women, which before its worldwide fame was done only in this country? No matter how! In fact, the design was developed by an American – and in the 1970s.

French manicure had every chance of having a completely different name. An accident occurred in history, due to which such a design became associated with France.

A manicure with a white border around the edge was invented in good old Hollywood. According to legend, in 1976, a well-known director approached the president of the Orly nail company, Jeff Pink, and asked him to come up with a universal manicure that would look great in the frame and would be combined with all the actress outfits.

Despite the fact that at that time everything unusual and colorful was in fashion, Jeff relied on a natural effect: a combination of pink or peach color of the nail plate and a beautiful snow-white accent on the border. And so the French manicure appeared – which Jeff Pink himself first called “Natural Look” (“natural look”).

For a time, a similar design carried such a name and was rarely used anywhere other than for filming commercials or movies. However, Jeff then showed off his manicure on the hands of Paris Fashion Week attendees – and the unusual style instantly went to the masses. Everyone started calling him French. And Jeff Pink was so fond of the short and elegant “French” that immediately after returning to America, he decided to use such a designation – which in the end forever remained in the history of the nail industry.
