When you have “BP”: honestly and without cuts on atopic dermatitis

Asking yourself every night “what did I do for my hydro-lipid mantle today” is a funny habit, isn’t it? But if you have the world’s most popular chronic skin condition, you’re bound to get one. Everyone has this same cloak, and it’s not a hero’s floating cloak, but a barrier, a protective layer over our skin. And atopic is the weakest point.

Don’t take care! In our articles, we collect the latest scientific data and the opinions of authoritative health experts. But remember: only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment.

According to statistics, up to 2% of the adult population in Europe faces atopic dermatitis, and in childhood the chance of getting acquainted with it is even higher – up to 25%. Getting into those “two out of a hundred” cash prizes isn’t the sweetest win. But I was lucky, and I have 9 years of experience behind me. Many people think that for a make-up artist this is an incompatible diagnosis with the profession, but this is not entirely true. In fact, AD is the brother of the same asthma, they cannot be infected. We pass any medical commission without any problem, except that we cannot be a donor out of remission. But skincare skills and high hygiene standards are almost ingrained in us, because we start learning them long before makeup.

Two things every atopic should know

  • Atopic dermatitis is a chronic disease. Pay attention to the last word, as this will give you the opportunity to firmly defend yourself against the “benefactors”. They just have to hear about the diagnosis, and you’ll be bombarded with a wealth of helpful advice on diets, healing concoctions, famous doctors and grandmothers from dense Siberian villages. Meanwhile, all people are different, everyone has their own struggle with dermatitis. Someone has achieved enlightenment – almost lifelong remission, and someone is just enjoying life, despite the spots and bubbles. Moreover, he finds many advantages and benefits in his life.
  • It’s no one’s fault if you have dermatitis. Not you, not your mother, no love for sweets and no aversion to oatmeal. Don’t let anyone blame you or your parents for having an autoimmune disease – there’s enough to worry about in life without it.

Is it possible to recognize a tendency to dermatitis in itself?

Here is a little checklist that may be an opportunity to listen to you more carefully. I ask hypochondriacs to urgently get away from the screen and read a good and nice book.

  • Small bubbles or cracks sometimes appear on the hands and feet;
  • You have hyperlinearity (google it, it’s not scary at all) – meaning there are a lot more lines and creases on the palms than usual;
  • From ordinary water, the skin is strongly stretched, and the “scales” never pass on the legs;
  • Redness often appears in the bend of the elbows and under the knees;
  • The concept of “follicular keratosis” is familiar and does not cause horror when read. These pimples on the skin have always been and do not interfere with normal life at all.

If two or more points are suitable, then most likely you have already encountered manifestations of dermatitis. It could be called a simple allergy or neurodermatitis – a skin reaction to severe stress, eczema. Dermatitis has so many names and subspecies that it’s no surprise to get confused. The author of this text only received the coveted diagnosis after a year and a half of active treatment for “an eczema of implicit origin, accompanied by allergic reactions”. The instructions, by the way, haven’t changed a bit: diet, wash with gloves, another drugstore cream and don’t get upset.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned after almost three years of daycare is trust but verification. Since no one knows for sure what exactly causes dermatitis in a particular person, you’ll be sticking a straw all over the place. The famous diet number five – boring but safe, will never make you worse. The sea is good for everyone. Calcium and all kinds of detox – too. Another thing is hormonal ointments. You have to be careful with them, but you shouldn’t be afraid of the word ‘hormones’. Short and infrequent courses can help with the most severe exacerbations. It is worth paying attention to the newest drugs with minimum doses and never buying ointments on the advice of friends. The mantra “we are all different” must be repeated until complete enlightenment.

Another hot topic is the masking of spots when they appear on the face and neck. It is with them that my passion for make-up began in its time. The desire to please everyone often skyrockets when “something is wrong” with you, as well as the temptation to cover everything that cannot be covered with sleeves and a collar. And now the densest foundation, concealer and even a green makeup base have already been purchased, but the result is not encouraging. There are a few obvious mistakes that almost everyone makes, and I want to talk about them separately.

Buy foundation at the pharmacy

It is believed that if you have skin problems, you don’t have to buy anything in an ordinary store. Except on the individual stands, where the consultants wear white coats. On the tubes, to which the hand reaches, the magic words are written: for skin with redness, for inflammation, for problem skin. As a rule, inside you will find nothing but a very dense foundation without natural ingredients (potential allergens). No matter how medicinal they try to look, they won’t be useful. And a dense layer of tone for every day is not what we really want at all. Especially since bumps and dry patches are still visible underneath. If the skin is irritated and “wet”, it is really better not to paint it. But if you really want to make the tone more even, it is better to choose a light foundation and combine it with a denser concealer. Don’t cover all the places, but the skin tone will visually even out. All together will look much better than a dry, motionless, but even mask.

Make up with brushes

Although not, the brushes can be – right and left. Last resort, sponge. All dermatitis is a microscopic sore on the skin. If you don’t wash your brushes every day, fine bristles are the best way to get dirt in them. In addition, each broken hair can unpleasantly sting irritated skin. If brushes are needed for dry products and shading, synthetics are worth choosing. It is easier to clean, the bristles break less and the risk of an allergic reaction is also reduced to a minimum.

Lots of powder

Remember: powder removes shine so well because it absorbs oil. And dry blushes and bronzers are also colored powders. In a thick and dense foundation, it is also there – for greater durability. And three layers of powder on irritated skin are definitely not worth applying. The good news is that almost all products are now available in a cream format.

Enthusiastic disguise of shortcomings and no attention to virtues

Who will have time to smoke when you have to cover every red dot? And someone cannot see the forces on the face that can be emphasized. Believe me, a few visible spots will not make the eyebrows less thick and the eye shape less spectacular. Atopic dermatitis (like acne, pigmentation, enlarged pores) is not an obstacle to self-expression with makeup. Whether to wear bright lips, to draw arrows – only you can decide for yourself.

And what to paint then?

  • If peeling is noticeable on the skin, and scrubs and peels accumulate dust on the shelf until remission, choose light-toned products that do not set on the skin. This means that they contain a minimum of powder, i.e. they dry out much less.
  • Good fit on the skin and high silicone content products. They are easy to calculate: a drop from the tester can hold its shape for several minutes, and the texture resembles foam. The most important thing is to try the product before you buy. If they don’t give you samples, come back with your jar. What can you do – a medical necessity.
  • Powders – a severe minimum. It is better to refuse matting, choose mineral powders with a bright, light shine. In the end, the mattifying wipes were not cancelled.
  • If you want to add blush, choose cream, coral or pink-beige shades. It is better to temporarily avoid cold shades of lilac-pink, they perfectly draw attention to redness. The same goes for lipsticks.
  • Alright, how do you prep your skin for makeup?

    First, wave your hand at all “natural non-GMO”. Decoctions, oils, infusions – garbage. For atopics, the best emollients, i.e. moisturizers, are of the same chemistry: a moderate amount of silicones, lipids, glycerin and urea. But with acids, peptides and other “enhancers”, it is better to wait for remission. Remember that a cream is not a medicine, even if it is prescribed by a doctor. Like any cosmetic, it may not be suitable. So do not rush to immediately buy half-liter packs, try it first.

    The most successful moisturizing texture under makeup is fluid or milk. A heavy cream often leaves a visible, slightly waxy film on the skin. A water-based foundation that rolls on instantly.
